Des Moines Parent Spotlight: Nickole Swensen

Nickole Swensen is truly a gem in Des Moines, Iowa. Whenever I have a conversation with her there is a warm calm that overcomes me. She is trained and specializes in energetic alignment. Learn more about what that means, her best parenting advice and more.

Give us a little background on your family and personal life! How many kids do you have? Have you lived in Des Moines all your life?

I live in Des Moines now but I was born in Houston, Texas. As a child, I moved back and forth from Texas to Iowa over the course of the years three different times. Then, five years ago my husband, kids, and I moved back to Texas where we lived in San Antonio for three years before moving back to Des Moines two years ago. When I lived in Texas as a child we would visit family in Iowa during the Summers and when I lived in Iowa we visited family in Texas in the Summers. So, I consider both places at home!

I met my husband, Dave, when I was a senior in High School at a football game. We’ve been married for 12 years now and have two boys, Lane 10 and Jack 8. We absolutely love to travel together as a family!

What is your business, and what do you do?

I’m a Mind-Body Wellness Practitioner and founder of Be Well. Be Happy. I specialize in energetic alignment with chakra balancing, energy healing, and coaching.

I have experience in a variety of energy healing modalities that access mind, body, spirit alignment.  I use my knowledge and expertise to give you an alignment experience that connects your mind, body, and spirit to your truth and allows you to access the power within to make your dreams a reality.

Why did you become a small business owner?

I became an entrepreneur 10 years ago when I had my first son. I wasn’t happy with what I was doing at the time and wanted to be home more with my family.

I come from a long line of small business owners. My grandparents owned their own business and both my parents were entrepreneurs. I definitely think I got my drive of owning my own business from my parents, they have always been supportive of my ideas.

Owning a business isn’t as easy as I had initially thought it would be 10 years ago but it’s so rewarding to be able to wake up loving what you do every day.

Where is your favorite place to take your children to play indoors?

We love the Blank Park Zoo, the Des Moines Botanical Garden, and the Des Moines Public Libraries! They are our favorite places to get out of the house during the winter.

There are so many great indoor exhibits at the zoo! We are huge animal lovers, my boys want to work with animals and animal conservation when they are older so we are there a lot!

The kids and I love to bring card games to the botanical gardens and pretend we’re in Hawaii when it gets too cold to play outside.

We have the best library system in Des Moines! We love reading and go to one of the area libraries every week.

Where is your favorite place to take your children to play outdoors?

Our family loves hiking and going on walks around Des Moines. A few of our favorite places are Gray’s Lake, Water Works Park, and Ashworth Park.

Parent’s day/night out. Describe your perfect parent only day/night out in Des Moines.

Dinner out with a craft beer or two and a walk around downtown.

What are some tips on juggling parenthood, working, and personal life?

Find a routine that works with your schedule and stick to it as best as possible!

Along with owning my business, I’m also a homeschool mom. I have a lot on my plate every day, if I didn’t schedule well and have a routine it could get hectic. We have school time in the morning and I work out of my home studio in the afternoon and evening. Because we are all pretty used to the daily schedule life is easier to balance.

Another tip that’s vital for me, is scheduling alone time every day to just sit and read or be in meditation.

What is your number one parenting tip?

Allow your kids to be who they want to be, allow them to explore their uniqueness and embrace it!
