Spring Break Des Moines 2020 is just around the corner. There are several classes and workshops being held all over Des Moines. Check out this great list below and register quickly. These classes can fill-up super fast. If I am missing your class or workshop, let me know. Make sure to check out our event calendar to stay up-to-date with events and activities.

Animal Rescue League

Monday, March 16th – Friday, March 20th

Campers will learn about pet care and responsibility, respect for animals and careers with animals while enjoying animal-related activities, special guest presentations, animal interactions, crafts, games and more! Campers will show their compassionate side by completing service projects to help the ARL shelter animals.


Located in Valley West Mall

Looking for something to do during the day over Spring Break?
We will have Open Studio from 10 am-6 pm, Monday-Friday with different $10 activities from the Make Cool Stuff Kits from 11 am-2 pm.

Art Happy

Monday, March 16

2 to 5 p.m.

Let your child explore the art and science of making handcrafted lip balms, sugar scrubs and body sprays in our 3 hours long DIY class. They will select from a variety of ingredients and containers to create their own products. A small snack will be provided. All supplies and ingredients are included in the price. The class is limited to 10 seats!

This year’s Spring Safari theme is Incredible Journey’s. Spring is just around the corner and the trees are coming alive again with leaves and the sounds of birds returning from their winter migrations. Join us for Spring Break as we explore the life of our feathered friends and learn about migration!

Camp Fire Heart Of Iowa

Monday, March 16 – Friday, March 20

Join Camp Fire Heart of Iowa for “Out of School” Days this spring! Drop your child off at one of their convenient drop locations and let them experience a day of excitement and learning at Camp Hantesa! Under the supervision of our trained staff, campers make new friends and interact with old ones through engaging programming. Each day includes transportation from one of our drop sites, a hot lunch, and a morning and afternoon snack. $37 per day.

Climb Iowa 

Session 1: March 16-17

Session 2: March 19-20

9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

$125 member; $150 non-member 

Climb Iowa camps will introduce young adventurers to rock climbing, but we won’t stop there. Children will learn about trust, teamwork, and problem solving while developing their rock climbing skills through interactive games and activities. For ages 8 to 13 years old.

Curtain Call Kids

March 16 – March 20

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.


Students in Kindergarten to 10th grade will be working to put together a full length musical in 1 week. They will be performing on Friday at 7 pm.

The Royal Quest is a musical quest of a princess that is being pushed to find a suitor but wants instead to choose adventure over love. With the help of her fairy god friends and some amazing dragon slayers, the princess and her sister will have to brave both Love and Adventure to outsmart the cave monsters and find out what makes someone truly worthy of the crown.

Des Moines Art Center

The Des Moines Art Center offers classes for all ages throughout the year.

Entirely Kids Day: Saturday, March 14; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free Entirely Kids Day featuring incredible art, music, and museum exploration—all about animals! Inspired by the exhibition The Elephant in the Room: Animal as Model, you will explore the way we, as humans, see our furry friends. Tangerine, the Art Center Café, will feature a special kid’s menu that afternoon.

Des Moines Children’s Museum

Botanical Illustration

Appreciate the fine details of plant parts as you learn some basic sketching and shading techniques. Then take time to create your own artwork in the Garden.

Seed Starting

Thursday, March 19

10:30-11:45 a.m.

Learn the importance of seeds as we discuss the plant life cycle and the many ways seeds are dispersed. You’ll go home with your own seeds and some tips and tricks to get your garden started early this year.

Flower Headbands and Boutonnieres

Friday, March 20

10:30-11:45 a.m.

Dissect a flower to discover the complexity of its internal parts, learn about a variety of flowers then create your own flower headband or boutonniere.

Iowa Circus Arts

March 16 – March 20

1 to 4 p.m.

Ever wanted to run away with the circus? Come and learn circus arts, from a real circus performer! Try out fun activities and games with juggling, hula hooping, aerial arts, and floor acrobatics, and even roll around in a human-sized hamster ball!

There’s a circus show at 3 pm on Friday, so that everyone can show off what they learned at Circus Camp for friends and family. All fitness levels are welcome.

Jester Park Equestrian

March 17 – March 20

9 a.m. to Noon

This Spring break we are focusing on working with horses around the barn and in the arena. Each hour the campers are here they will be spending it with our pony and horses! By the time the 3-hour camp is over your camper should know how to groom, lead independently, and ride! This is the PERFECT way to get a taste of what summer camps are like at Jester Park Equestrian Center!

Kindergarteners through 3rd Graders are invited to come and spend an AMAZING morning at the barn and learn what it’s like to be surrounded by the best ponies and horses! Kiddos will explore the barn, learn horse care, groom ponies, and experience a beginner pony riding lesson!

Kids Create

Living History Farms

Camps are offered as 1-day or 5-day experiences. Receive a 15% discount if you are a member. There are three themes to choose from Celebrations Around the World, Preservers of the Land, Families in 1900 and more. Prices vary on camp and how many days your child attends.

State Historical Museum

Screening of ‘A League of Their Own’

Follow the journey of the Rockford Peaches, a team within the nation’s first women’s baseball league in the 1940s. As the team succeeds on the baseball diamond, they help break gender barriers and earn nationwide respect for the players and the team. This film features the Iowa softball player, Brenda Ferrari.

Museum Vault Tour

Get a behind-the-scenes look at how the museum cares for and stores thousands of artifacts. This hour-long walking tour will take visitors through the climate-controlled collection storage area where thousands of Iowa’s artifacts are located. Advanced registration is required, and participants must be 12 or older.

Screening of the ‘LEGO Movie

An ordinary Lego named Emmet is mistaken for someone else and is now placed with the task of saving the LEGO universe. Will he and his new friends stop Lord Business? This animated movie features the voice talents of the University of Iowa alum, Jake Johnson.

History Mysteries

March 20

1:30 to 3 p.m.; Free

What is that? Drop-in to the museum anytime between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. on March 15, 18 and 19 to become a history detective. Adults and children will investigate interesting objects from the museum’s collection to guess what they are and how they were used long ago.

Due to the use of historical objects, this program is for children 8-12 years old. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.

Triumph Martial Arts
