St. Patrick’s Day is a fun holiday to celebrate for all ages. While many of us may think of green beer and large parties, there are many ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as a whole family in Des Moines. We are sharing some of our favorite ways to celebrate!

Catch the Leprechaun Hunt
Friday, March 17 at the Franklin Public Library. All day during open hours.
Can you help find the sneaky leprechaun in the children’s area, follow the clues and it might lead to a treasure at the end of the rainbow. All ages.
Des Moines St. Paddy’s Day Marathon & Half Marathon
Saturday, March 18
Grab the family and challenge each other to a fun run! This race also offers a ‘Kids Dash Start’ and 5K. Perfect to get the entire family involved in some outdoor, green St. Patty’s Day fitness fun! Register today.
GPS Pot of Gold
Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m.
Pioneer Park, Des Moines
Participants will learn how to use a handheld Global PositioningUnit and then use the GPS to find hidden “golden treasures” in the park. With a little leprechaun luck, along the way, they will also find some information about the wildlife that calls Pioneer Park home. Move at your own pace and see if you can find all the hidden treasures that Pioneer Park has to offer. Pre-registration has required a fee of $10 and only applies to participants that will be collecting the“gold.”

Hunt for Gold Hike
March 17 at 10 a.m. at Brown’s Woods
March 19 at 2 p.m. at Brown’s Woods
Join Muddy Boots for this St. Patrick’s Day-themed hike as we hunt for gold hidden along the trail, reading a themed story together after our hike. Meet at the shelter and take a child-led hike along the trail. Free event. No registration is required.
St. Patrick’s Day Family Glow Bowling

Join Warrior Lanes for a Family-Friendly Bowling Party. These parties are a blast and feature Glow-In-The-Dark Bowling, Mom-Approved Music, Food, Fun, (alcohol-free), and of course…..Family! You must pre-register for this event.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Friday, March 17 at Noon
Downtown Des Moines
This year this fun holiday falls on a Thursday during Spring Break. If you are lucky enough to take the day off work, head to downtown Des Moines for this classic, annual celebration perfect for kids. This annual event is sponsored by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. Dress in all your green gear and festive wear and celebrate! The parade begins at Noon at 15th Street to Grand and then east to 8th Street. Learn more about the parade and parade route by visiting their website.
