Des Moines Parent Spotlight: Becky Pospisal

For seven years, Becky Pospisal owned The Knotty Nail in the Valley Junction, giving folks around the metro a fun place to connect and create a DIY project. She’s on a brief hiatus from the business while she moves out of the physical storefront and transitions to her new role at Above and Beyond Cancer as their Director of Mission Delivery.

Des Moines Parent connected with Becky to learn more about her and her journey.

Give us a little background on yourself.

I was born and raised right here in Iowa! I grew up in Central City, went to college in Pella at Central, and have been in Des Moines for almost 20 years. I’m married with three kids: Mara, Noel, and Flyn. Our oldest just graduated from Iowa State, our middle is starting 4th grade and the youngest is in 3rd.

Could you give us an overview of your business and what inspired it?

I’ve owned The Knotty Nail for the last seven years, and it grew out of the idea that I truly wanted to do something different than the career path I was on. It took off quickly and somehow, I owned a storefront in Valley Junction for the last four years. I just closed the store, but my online shop is still open. I don’t know what lies ahead for The Knotty Nail so I’m just going with the flow!

What are your favorite parts of your business?

Oh man — the flexibility has been amazing! I love being able to come and go, set my hours, and be fully responsible for my successes (and failures, ha!). Also, the people I have met over the last seven years are incredible, and I’ve made some amazing friendships from owning a business.

How do you juggle your parenting responsibilities with your work responsibilities?

Does anyone do this well? Ha! My kids come to work with me, a lot! It’s a family affair, always.

What are some of your favorite things to do with your family around the metro?

We love the parks by our house, Blank Park Zoo, Raccoon River Park, Clive Aquatic Center, and bookstores!

What’s your ideal parent day or night out?

I love live music, hitting up local breweries and restaurants, or enjoying all the great festivals we have in our city. Of course, my favorite is the Iowa State Fair!

What’s your number one parenting tip?

No one knows what they’re doing, so just give it a shot.
