Give us a little background of your family and personal life! How many kids do you have? Have you lived in Des Moines all your life?

I’m originally from Central City, Iowa and went to college at Central College in Pella. We joke that I went to college to play softball, not to learn (only half true). I moved to Des Moines after graduation. My husband Drew and I met on Match.com and I immediately won him over because I could pronounce his last name correctly!  Three years later, we got married on top of a mountain in Colorado and it’s still one of my favorite days, ever.  We have two children together – Flyn (4) and Noel (5) and my bonus daughter Mara (17).

What is your business, and what do you do?

I am the chief everything officer at The Knotty Nail. We are an upscale DIY studio, specializing in workshops, DIY kits and custom decor. You’ve probably seen our famous string art workshops around social media. I do just about everything – HA!  I have four awesome gals that work with me and keep my head above water.  I am so excited we are moving into a new store in Valley Junction and will be opening August 31!

Why did you become a small business owner?

Oh, man…where do I start? I have always wanted to work for myself and start something from scratch. I’m rather independent and I love changing things up – so, working for myself, I can do that without disrupting those around me. And, well, I was in a position in my career where I was unhappy and ready for a change. So, that’s what I did! My husband and I went on vacation and I told him, “We aren’t coming home until I have a business idea.” Well, we didn’t have it right away but a few weeks later, the idea came to life.  3 months later, we launched and three years later, here we are!

Where is your favorite place to take your children to play indoors?

We are big fans of the Science Center and Jordan Creek Mall, especially Barnes and Noble!  We also love the Urbandale Library.

Where is your favorite place to take your children to play outdoors?

Blank Park Zoo is our number one place to go. We also love checking out the local parks, Raccoon River (the beach!) and the Farmer’s Markets.

Parent’s day/night out. Describe your perfect parent only day/night out in Des Moines.

My perfect date would be dinner anywhere downtown, Nightfall on the River and drinks with our friends.

What are some tips on juggling parenthood, working, and personal life?

My philosophy is quality over quantity. As a business owner who is open nights and weekends, this is tough. I try to be present when I am home and play with the kids as much as I can. Healthy boundaries with your business are crucial but difficult. I always make time to see the kids, see a friend and see my husband.  People interaction is very important to me to keep my cup full!

What is your number one parenting tip?

Always bring an extra set of clothes. FOR EVERYONE. EVEN YOU!
