Des Moines Parent Spotlight: Abbie Sawyer
I had the chance to sit down with Abbie Sawyer and her husband Chris LoRang a few weeks ago. Abbie is such a kind soul owner Capital Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center in the East Village with her husband. The two of them have a passion for supporting others within the community and spreading the word about being healthy. Learn more about Abbie, Capital Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center, and her best parenting tips.
Give us a little background of your family and personal life! How many kids do you have? Have you lived in Des Moines all your life?
My husband, Chris LoRang, and I have one daughter, Emily, who is just over two and a half. We live a block from where I grew up in the Waveland Neighborhood. We just love Des Moines. After growing up here, I moved to Iowa City for undergrad. Chris and I met there, then moved all the way to New Zealand for my Master’s. Coming back stateside, we landed in Davenport for him to attend chiropractic school at Palmer. Then we made the move to Des Moines. As we say, we didn’t move “back to Des Moines” — we moved “forward to Des Moines.” We love it here. It’s been a fabulous community to start the clinic (Capital Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center in the East Village) and raise our daughter.
What is your business, and what do you do?
My business is Capital Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Center in the East Village. We are a sports and family chiropractic clinic that offers a wide range of services, from adjustments, rehab exercises, chiropractic acupuncture and dry needling, soft tissue treatments to infant motor pattern assessment and rehabilitation.
I am the Director of Communications and my husband, Chris LoRang, is the chiropractic physician and Clinic Director. We are lucky to have a great team and a fabulous community of patients.
What do I do? I help spread the word about how our clinic can help people, as well as sharing fun and interesting tips to help people pursue their best lives. Anything from recipes and events to current research about health and wellness. We are all about being partners in each person’s wellness journey, whether they’re getting treatments in the clinic or engaging with us on social media, reading our newsletter, enjoying our rotating local art displays, sharing produce in our Community Garden Share Table, or attending one of our community events.
Why did you become a small business owner?
I became a small business owner because it was the best match of my skills, vision, and opportunity. I haven’t looked back since.
Where is your favorite place to take your children to play indoors?
Great question. Probably the Valley West Mall’s Children’s Museum. Emily loves to just run, so the open expanses of the mall are well-suited for that (she is a toddler, after all!). We also love the Science Center and the Botanical Gardens.
Where is your favorite place to take your children to play outdoors?
We love any and every park with a slide or a swing and a bit of shade!
Parent’s day/night out. Describe your perfect parent only day/night out in Des Moines.
Chris and I love to meet up in the East Village (imagine that!) and just go for a walk. Sometimes we’ll grab a coffee at Mars or Scenic Route. Sometimes we’ll get a tea from Gong Fu. There are always interesting sites, events, and people in the neighborhood. Plus, it’s right outside our clinic door, so the commute is short!
What are some tips on juggling parenthood, working, and personal life?
Good communication, honesty, and feeding your soul are three key factors for us. Modeling our ideal for our daughter is a great reminder. What do we want to teach her from our example?
What is your number one parenting tip?
Prioritize sleep!
