How many of you still buy a REAL Christmas tree every year? We used to always use an artificial one, but when we started having children I wanted them to experience a real one. The great thing about purchasing a real tree is the experience of picking one out and bringing it home. We love this tradition. Take a look at some great places to find real Christmas trees in Des Moines.

Deal’s Orchard

Monday – Saturday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Sunday; 1 to 6 p.m. 

Deal’s Orchard is another fall favorite, but they also have Christmas trees too. You can cut your own tree or select a pre-cut tree. They offer several types and you can check out the Apple Barn. The Apple Barn has a fun train, you can do some shopping, take a picture in Santa’s sleigh, get a free cup of hot apple cider, a bag of popcorn and of course an apple.

Various types of trees grown and cut down in Merrill, Wisconsin. Trees are transported and sold throughout Iowa and Wisconsin.

Geisler Farms

Christmas trees are precut and all different sizes. You can warm up in the red shed that offers homemade jams and frozen apple pies.

Hill’s Tree Farm

Opens Friday after Thanksgiving.

Fridays & Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sundays; 1 to 5 p.m. 

Hill’s Tree Farm encourages you to cut your own tree with hand saws they provide, but they will cut a tree if asked. Each tree is labeled with what type it is. There are also hand decorated wreaths, greenery baskets, mantle pieces, and more for purchase. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and cookies or enjoy a warm fire and roast marshmallows in their fire pit.

Howell Tree Farm 

3129 Howell Court, Cumming

Open Saturday before Thanksgiving.

Open 7 days a week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until December 23rd.

Closed Thanksgiving Day. 

Howell Tree Farm, located just 20 minutes from Des Moines, invites you to come to pick out a fresh tree for your Christmas celebration. Beginning the Saturday before Thanksgiving, you can visit the farm and pre-tag your own special tree. Take it with you that day or call ahead when you’re ready to decorate and they will have it ready for you when you come. Howell’s Tree Farm is one of our favorites to purchase a Christmas tree.

Pinkley’s Red Roof Farms Christmas Trees

We picked our Christmas Tree from Pinkley’s this year. After hearing about this hidden gem from a friend, I knew we needed to make a trip. Not only do they offer beautiful trees, but they have farm animals, hot cocoa, coffee, fun loft and photobooth inside a 120-year-old barn. The kids might have had the most fun visiting and playing with the pigs, donkeys, and farm kitties.

Strautman Tree Farm

Saturday before Thanksgiving until December 23

Daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Strautman has thousands of options for Christmas trees. Shop in the gift shop, browse ornaments, drink hot cider and eat cookies.

Miller Tree Farm

7404 SE Vandalia Drive, Runnells

Opens Saturday after Thanksgiving. 

Sunday – Friday; Noon to 5 p.m. 

Saturday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

You can choose and cut your own tree in their field or choose a fresh pre-cut. Miller Tree Farm offers free candy canes for your children.

Walnut Ridge Farm 

1400 Hillcrest Drive, Indianola

Friday After Thanksgiving from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 
Saturdays; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
Sundays; Noon to 5 p.m. 
Weekdays; 3 to 6 p.m. 
After December 18th call for hours open.

Find and cut down your own Christmas tree or choose from preselected trees available. They also offer free miniature train rides on a special schedule.
