Valentine Events in Des Moines 2021
It is that time of year to grab your little one and celebrate Valentine’s Day. There may not be many Valentine dances this year, but there are still some fun virtual and/or social distancing friendly events happening in Des Moines, Iowa. Take a look at the list below. We will continue to add to this guide throughout the season!
January 4 – February 12
Urbandale Parks & Recreation
Themed kits come with everything you will need to make two beautiful cards to share with a loved one. Try their holiday cards to spread good tidings and season’s greetings, make Valentine’s card and send it to your special someone, or send a Birthday card to celebrate their special day.
10 to 11 a.m.
Stop by Johnston Public Library to pick up a Take-Home Adult Crafting Kit — this month featuring the supplies to make a homemade paper valentine. All materials are included in the kit EXCEPT glue. To-Go Adult Craft Kits are available for contactless curbside pick-up while supplies last. These kits will go fast and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is necessary.
February 6 & February 13
Adel Family Fun Center
Bring the Family for this FUNdraiser benefiting the ADM After Prom! Space is limited, so please call the Adel Family Fun Center to make your reservation!
This is a family-style event, not separated by mother/son or father/daughter. We are putting 1 family per lane or up to 5 bowlers per lane. Groups of 2 or 3 may be combined with other couples, triples. If you wish to bowl with specific people, please indicate when making the reservation. There are 3 shifts per Saturday; 4p, 6p, & 8p for both Saturday the 6th and 13thSocial distancing is in effect, and masks are required inside the facility at all times unless you are seated, eating, and or drinking.
$10 per bowler, half going to the ADM After Prom!
February 8 – 21
McVay Nature Trail
Join WCCB and Indianola Parks and Recreation for a hike-when-you-please event. Hike along the McVay Trail in Indianola and see if you can find 50 hidden hearts. The hearts are all different sizes and colors. Please leave the hearts in the location that you find them for others to enjoy. There will be a sign at each end of the trail to show where it starts and finishes. This event is geared for the whole family. The hearts will be along the trail from February 8-21, 2020. 8 a.m. to Noon
Urbandale Parks & Recreation will bring cookies to you! In each kit, there will be 10 cookies and frosting for you to design the perfect holiday treat! They will deliver them “contact-free” to your doorstep.
** Delivery is limited to LESS than 5.0 miles from Urbandale City Hall (3600 86th Street).
February 4-7 and February 12-14
Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
Grab your honey (kids can come too!) and stroll the dome lit up by luminaries, lanterns, and twinkle lights while enjoying drinks and food available for purchase from Trellis. Want to cherish the memories? Chelsea Kyaw will be offering mini ten-minute photo sessions—available Friday, Feb. 5, and Friday, Feb. 12 ONLY—with all photography proceeds benefiting the Garden.
4 to 7 p.m.
Lutheran Church of Hope – Waukee
It’s time for a Daddy Daughter Date Night! Swing by the Hope Waukee Atrium to get your photo taken in the photo booth and to pick up the ultimate Daddy Daughter Date Night Kit, which includes 10 super fun ideas, a craft, photo props, cookies for both dad and daughter, a party favor and more. Only daughters need a kit – they are designed for dads and daughters to do together!
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Crafts will be geared towards 3-9-year-olds. The kit will include ingredients to make a Valentine’s Day snack plus a variety of other crafts with instructions. Participants will need access to glue and scissors at home to complete a few projects. Parks & Recreation staff will deliver your craft kit directly to your doorstep, weather permitting. *Delivery only available to Ankeny residents.
February 13 at 10 a.m.
Join local baker and confectionery artist Taylor Zemansky from Third Shift Cookies, Cakes, and More during this special girls-only class. We will decorate 4 different cookie designs (8 total) while learning basic airbrush techniques, piping, and flooding techniques. Plus take home Taylor’s personal royal icing recipe, extra icing from the class, and a scribe to continue to decorate with everything you learned at home!
1 to 2 p.m.
Greenwood Park, Des Moines
Bring your child to this special hike and craft at Greenwood Park! You will meet together for a group hike, hunting for hidden hearts along the trail. Then children will choose from a selection of crafts to make special gifts for their loved ones! Crafts will range in difficulty making it an event for all ages, even your littlest explorers.
$15 for children ages 2 and up, under 2 are welcome to join for free. Register here.
10 to 11:45 a.m.
The virtual Tea at the Castle is back! And this time, in honor of Valentine’s Day, you will be celebrating Carl and Edith Weeks’ love story, the original owners of Salisbury House! Guests will pick up their tea kits at the Salisbury House between 10:00 am and Noon on the day of the event. Kits include:
- Traditional afternoon tea snacks
- Two varieties of tea
- Local honey
- Fresh flowers
February 13 & 14

Book-lovers! Pamper your favorite people *including yourself* Valentine’s Day weekend, Saturday, Feb. 13 and Sunday, Feb. 14 from 10 am – 2 pm. Bundle the perfect book with treats and treasures from other local makers and doers into a pretty parcel at our open-air bookshop. We’ll have all the twine, craft paper, and ribbon ready for you to put your bookish bouquet together on the spot. Storyhouse will be stocked with new books for grown-ups and children alike with plenty of empowering and joyous titles for gifting. Bring the kiddos on Saturday at 11 am for an outdoor storytime.Other DSM treasures you’ll find at the bookshop:

Don’t have a babysitter for Valentine’s Day? That’s Okay! Break out your fancy clothes for a memorable fun-filled Valentine’s night out WITH the kids. No need to wait at a stuffy restaurant. You can have dinner and FUN at the same place! Be prepared to walk into a Valentine’s Day Party! Your ticket gets you in the door to enjoy all of this awesomeness!

Family FUN in 2021- physically distanced social fun. Get out and get active with your family this Sunday. Glow bowling, pizza & pop for up to 5 guests per socially distanced lane. Registration closes at 6 pm on Friday 2/12 or when available lanes sell out.
