Superhero and Princess Skate at Brenton Skating Plaza

Snow Ball by Des Moines Parks and Recreation

Cost: $10 per person
Join Des Moines Parks and Recreation for Snow Ball at the Science Center of Iowa. Come ready to dance, take pictures, craft, check out the exhibits and enjoy a chocolate fondue station. Each child will also get a carnation flower. Register here.

Jurassic Quest is the world’s largest dino event. Children will get a chance to ride on the animatronic dinosaurs, jump in dinosaur bounce houses (socks are required), create a dinosaur craft, dig for fossils, meet baby dinos that are very life-like, run around with the adolescent dinosaurs, and greet the underwater sea creatures including the 50-foot megalodon! There will be a live interactive Raptor show and a “triceratots” soft play area. Ticket options include a Kids Unlimited Ticket for $36 which will include unlimited access to all of the activities. You could also purchase a general admission ticket for $22 and then pay for the activities as you go for $6 each.
Red Flannel Run

Cost: 5K run-$40 or 10K run-$50
Dress up in your original red flannel attire and get ready to run! Red Flannel Run is Wellmark’s YMCA’s biggest fundraiser and all proceeds go towards making the YMCA facilities and programming accessible to all. The run started 34 years ago with two single guys that didn’t have dates for Valentine’s Day. Now, it is seen as the unofficial kickoff to the outdoor race season. Keep up your new year’s resolution and try the 5K or 10K option.
Des Moines Parent Summer Camp Fair

When: Saturday, February 18th, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Get excited about summer and join us at the Des Moines Parent Summer Camp Fair! This is a free event to learn about spring and summer programming in the Des Moines area. You can learn about all the options, register for camps, and enjoy freebies. The first 100 attendees get a free swag bag! There will be a special storytime by local author Megan Cline, a yoga class from Happy Heart Yoga, a kid’s dance class by Tippi Toes, and more!
Color the Wind Kite Festival
Address: 205 Main Ave, Clear Lake, IA 50428
When: Saturday, February 18th, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
You will need to drive a little north for this but it’s worth the drive! Head to Clear Lake to see the Midwest’s largest Color the Wind Kite Festival. Serious kite-flyers will fly large kites. Be part of the fun and bring your own kite or purchase one on-site. If it happens to be too cold to be outside, just drive along N Lakeview Drive to view the kites. Food trucks will be available or stop at a local restaurant after.
Des Moines Home and Garden Show

Pretend it’s summertime at the Des Moines Home and Garden Show! Explore 7 feature gardens created by top local landscapers. Check out the Rose Farm Inspiration Stage for presentations ranging from Farm to Table Dinners with award-winning chefs, The Art of pie making, Farm School for kids, and All Things Floral. Plus Karri Rose will share her story of building a modern-day farmstead. New to the show this year is the Made in Iowa Market. All exhibitors will have products made right here in Iowa. Thursday is Hero Day, free admission for active military personnel, veterans, firefighters, medical professionals, police officers, and other first responders. Bring a valid ID. Teacher day is Sunday, all educators and school staff will receive free admission.
Iowa Wolves Basketball Game

There are so many sports teams to support in Des Moines. This month, check out Iowa Wolves, the minor league team of the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves. There are a few postgame concerts including Country Night on February 4th and Faith and Family Night on February 5th. Parking is $10 in the main lot, north of the arena. Metered parking is available on the street and Sundays street parking is free!
