Join us for a morning yoga flow! Kids and caregivers will flow through a short yoga class, with a story. Together you will learn simple yoga poses, mindfulness techniques, and movement games. Sensory-Friendly Hours provide a quieter, less crowded SCI experience for families with children on the autism spectrum. The Science Center of Iowa is an exciting place, bustling with sights and sounds… but we provide a quieter, less crowded experience. Families with children on the autism spectrum or children with sensory processing disorders will enjoy exploring the Science Center of Iowa with the help of Sensory Guide signage, which indicates audio, visual and activity stimuli. Sensory-Friendly Hours are currently planned for the second Tuesday of each month from 4-7 p.m.! Admission is free. Advanced ticket registration is required as we limit the number of attendees. This number is monitored closely to ensure a true sensory-friendly experience.

This month, you can join us to make a rainbow that will stick around! Make your own bright, colorful decoration for your wall using paper plates, paper straws, beads, pipe cleaners, and markers. Celebrate Earth Day with your own rainbow.

Hundreds of Polk County youth have experienced the wonder and magic of the 4-H Chick Hatching programming in local classrooms—a highlight of the year for many students. This program explores the life cycle of poultry and teaches about the needs of living things by incubating and hatching chicken eggs. We are excited to bring Chick Hatching at no cost to participants, one of our most popular 4-H youth programs, to our office. This month, we’re celebrating Graffiti Art and highlighting the work of legendary graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Join us to create a mixed media painting/ collage. Learn a scrape painting technique for your background, then collage pieces of magazines or newspapers into your painting. Finally, you’ll layer paint over the top to add in shapes and patterns such as a heart or lightning bolt. We’ll also talk about adding in your own subtle visual motif (the same way that Basquiat often used a crown). The possibilities are endless!  Have fun, hang out with friends, and paint with us.  

We have age recommendations, but anyone 10 -17 may choose the session that works best for you (both are the same painting): 

• Ages 10-14 are encouraged to register for the 4:30 PM session. 
• Ages 13-17 are encouraged to register for the 6:00 PM session.

The Des Moines Playhouse presents Crazy for You April 17-May 3. City-slicker Bobby Child travels to Nevada to foreclose on a rundown theatre. When he falls for the theatre owner's spirited daughter, Polly, Bobby vows to win her favor by saving the theatre with the grandest show the town has ever seen! The show runs Wednesday–Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Saturdays & Sundays at 2:00 PM (There is no 2:00 PM show on Saturday, April 18).

At this longer storytime, we’ll dive into a topic and explore the fascinating world around us using a combination of nonfiction and fiction books. Each storytime will typically include reading, discussion, one craft, and one science activity. 

Target Audience: 3-6 years old  |  Registration encouraged to help us plan but not required

Join us for Story Sprouts This fun, interactive story time explores nature and plants. During each program participants enjoy stories and an activity based on the week’s theme. Story Sprouts is geared toward children ages two to five. Included with general admission. This week’s theme: Wonders of Nature

“Build Piñatas to Break Barriers” is a family workshop promoting creativity, connection, and community during National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Families work together to repurpose recycled materials into colorful piñatas while learning simple ways to strengthen relationships through communication and shared activities. The program encourages positive family interaction, cooperative problem‑solving, and hands-on engagement suitable for all ages. Participants will leave with a completed craft, increased awareness of protective factors, and practical ideas for fostering strong, nurturing family bonds.

Enjoy this event with a bilingual, Spanish and English-speaking presenter. 

While geared for ages 6-11, younger and older youth are welcome. Registration is encouraged though not required.

There are recreational and competitive divisions. $25 per adult and $15 per youth (17 & under). Finish the week by cheering on athletes at the Drake Relays from April 22-April 25. The Des Moines Playhouse presents Crazy for You April 17-May 3. City-slicker Bobby Child travels to Nevada to foreclose on a rundown theatre. When he falls for the theatre owner's spirited daughter, Polly, Bobby vows to win her favor by saving the theatre with the grandest show the town has ever seen! The show runs Wednesday–Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Saturdays & Sundays at 2:00 PM (There is no 2:00 PM show on Saturday, April 18).

  The 2026 Drake Road Races is the official start to the Drake Relays! On Saturday, April 18, athletes have the chance to run a 5K, 10K or Half-Marathon. All of the races will finish inside the Blue Oval at Drake Stadium. On Tuesday, April 21 at 6:00 PM, participate or cheer on racers at the Grand Blue Mile in Downtown Des Moines. There are recreational and competitive divisions. $25 per adult and $15 per youth (17 & under). Finish the week by cheering on athletes at the Drake Relays from April 22-April 25.   Registration is open to Altoona and rural Polk County residents 4 weeks before the event. Registration will be open to the general public 3 weeks before the event. Registration for non-residents that is marked "yes" for residency will be canceled and moved to the pending waitlist if space is available. You may receive two emails, one for the cancelation and one for the pending waitlist. Your registration will automatically move to confirmed on the correct date if seats are available.

For the second time in a three-year span, Jordan Creek Town Center will host an elite-level pole vault competition indoors on Monday, April 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. as part of the 116th Drake Relays. The men's field for the Vault at Jordan Creek will include the current American record-holder and an Olympic silver medalist going head-to-head while the women's division is set to feature the top two athletes in the world. "Vault at Jordan Creek is such a special showcase of athletic excellence and community engagement, and we're excited to see this elite indoor pole vault competition return," Franklin P. Johnson Director of the Drake Blake Boldon said. "Hosting world-class athletes in a unique indoor venue highlights the very best of our sport while inspiring young athletes and giving fans a front-row seat to unforgettable performances. The return of this event strengthens our commitment to delivering exceptional experiences for competitors, spectators, and the entire community." The women's field at Vault at Jordan Creek will showcase a handful of superb vaulters including the top two ranked athletes in the world. Katie Moon, the current world No. 1, will be in Jordan Creek Town Center. Moon boasts the second-best American jump of all-time at 4.95m/16-2.75. She was a 2021 Olympic champion in Tokyo and more recently took the silver medal in Paris. Moon will go head-to-head with world No. 2 Sandi Morris, who was announced yesterday as a 2026 Drake Relays Athletes Hall of Fame inductee. Morris holds the American record and has captured six Relays titles in 2016-19, 2021, and the Capital Square Pole Vault crown in 2016. She was an Olympic silver medalist that same year and earned four World Championships during her career. The women's field is also highlighted by 2026 US Indoor runner-up Emily Grove, who qualified for the 2025 World Indoor Championships. Grove has a long history of jumping at Drake both as a professional competitor and collegiate star at the University of South Dakota. Reigning men's division champion KC Lightfoot will be returning to Des Moines to defend his Vault at Jordan Creek crown. Lightfoot currently holds the American men's record at 6.07m/19-11, a mark set in 2023. He finished fourth at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the same year he won the NCAA Indoor title while at Baylor University. Lightfoot is tied atop the collegiate all-time list with current world record holder and Olympic champion Mondo Duplantis. Six-time U.S. champion Chris Nilsen will be part of the loaded men's field. Nilsen, like Emily Grove, was a standout at South Dakota and ranks third all-time among American men with a 6.05m/19-10.25 indoor leap. Nilsen is a 2-time Olympian with a silver medal in 2021. He also was a Drake Relays champion in 2022, his last visit to Des Moines. Zach Bradford is also among the highlights of the men's field. Bradford has qualified for World Outdoor Championships twice and won the US Indoor title in 2026. A selection of the elite vaulters will also compete outdoors at Drake Stadium during the afternoon session on Saturday, April 25. 2026 marks the first time in two years that the Drake Relays has hosted an indoor pole vault event at the Jordan Creek Town Center. The 2024 edition coincided with the mall's 20th anniversary and marked the end of a 10-year hiatus of the event. The Drake Relays will partner with Catch Des Moines to host the Vault at Jordan Creek. "Drake Relays is one of our city's most iconic and impactful events," said Trina Flack, president and CEO of Catch Des Moines. We are excited to partner on the Vault at Jordan Creek Town Center, which allows us to showcase a vibrant fun area of our community to visitors while giving residents a fun and unique way to experience the excitement of the Relays."
