Wonder Spelen Playground in Pella, Iowa
Pella’s all-inclusive playground, Wonder Spelen playground (miracle play in Dutch) is truly a playground that invites kids of all abilities and ages to play together. Wonder Spelen is a fully fenced-in playground with two gates that close. The main playground structure has a ramp that connects to every level of the playground making every section available to children with all abilities. It also has plenty of ways to slide down and climb up. The main structure is decorated with tulips, a large windmill, and children in Dutch outfits which is such a fun touch celebrating Pella’s heritage.
There is a large area with two structures for younger children. One is a low-to-the-ground playhouse created for crawlers to explore. The second one is a small house connected to a play firehouse that invites kids to use their imagination. My kids loved playing pretend in this area and driving the fire truck.
Wonder Spelen has multiple smaller freestanding items scattered throughout the park. It features an interactive arch that invites children to play with audio-guided games. It has two oodle swings and a We-Go-Swing (multiperson swing, with no wheelchair transfer needed.) My kids also loved the cozy dome, sensory wall, in-ground merry-go-round, and spinner.

Pella offers so much to discover. We always stop at Jaarsma Bakery, 727 Franklin St, for some Dutch letters for me and frosted cookies for the kids. This time we adventured ten miles to climb Cordova Observation Tower, 1293 Emerald Dr in Otley, IA on Lake Red Rock. Make sure you bring two quarters for each person. It is absolutely worth it for the view!
If coming from the Des Moines metro, I highly recommend taking a ten-minute detour, on your way to Pella and driving through Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, 9981 Pacific St in Prairie City. My kids love seeing the Bison!
