Ice Skating Lessons in Des Moines 

Ice Skating is a perfect winter activity and a great way to get in some physical activity. For many family members, it may be their first time. With indoor and outdoor rinks around the Des Moines area, we have some great options to learn to skate. Whether your child wants to learn, you want private lessons, or group lessons, there is a class for everyone. Take a look at our list of options for ice skating lessons in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ames Figure Skating Club 

Address: Ames/ISU Ice Arena, 1507 Gateway Hills Park Dr, Ames, IA 50014

When: Classes are offered year-round

Cost: Prices start at $90 per skater

Learn to skate with the Ames Figure Skating Club. These ice skate classes start with a parent/tot option for 3-5-year-olds with a parent. This is to get children used to the ice with the help of a parent. They also have Snowplow Sam, Basic Classes, Freestyle Classes, Hockey and Adult. 

Brenton Skating Plaza 

Address: Brenton Skating Plaza, 520 Robert D. Ray Dr, Des Moines, IA 50309

When: Held throughout the skating season. Follow this page for up-to-date information. 

Cost: Free class but $5 skate rental 

Head downtown to the outdoor rink to learn to skate at the Brenton Skating Plaza. These classes will be held by professional instructor, Darlene Lewis. Those 4 and older of all abilities are welcome to join. 

Central Iowa Figure Skating Club 

Address: Buccaneer Arena, 7201 Hickman Road, Urbandale, IA 50322

When: Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout fall, winter and spring 

Cost: 6 week sessions are $120 per skater

Learn to skate with the Central Iowa Figure Skating Club at Buccaneer Arena. They have several levels of classes for all abilities. The first level is snowplow sam which is designed for students under 6 to build confidence while learning to skate. Other levels include basic skills, USFS Aspire, hockey, and adult. Each class is 30 minutes. Skate rentals are included with registration. Parents can register as snowplow parents for an extra fee. 

Iowa Figure Skating Academy

Address: Metro Ice Sports Facility, 5100 NW 72nd St, Urbandale, IA 50322

When: Winter, Spring, and Fall sessions, each session is 6 classes on Tuesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays

Cost: 1st skater: $150 2nd skater: $125 Register here.

Iowa Figure Skating Academy hosts six-week sessions for those looking to learn to skate. The classes last one hour with 30 minutes of practice ice and 30 minutes of a lesson with a coach. Rental skates are included with registration. Children as young as 3 can join the class but it’s important to think about if your child can be away from you, listen to an instructor, and are comfortable with being on ice. Parents can join kids on the ice for an extra fee. They have lessons available for children and adults. 

Rec Plex 

Address: Rec Plex, 6500 Grand Ave, West Des Moines, IA 50266

When: Sundays or Tuesdays Fall, Winter and Spring

Cost: 6 week sessions are $110 per skater

Learn to skate at the Rec Plex. This program is for people of all ages and skill levels. The classes follow Learn to Skate USA Basic Skills. Each class will consist of 30 minutes of coaching and 30 minutes of free skating. The ratio is 12:1 for students/instructors, except snowplow which is 8:1. Skate rentals are included with registration.

Ice Skating in Des Moines

There are many spots in the Des Moines area to ice skate! Many of the locations listed above offer public skating, open skating, special events, hockey leagues, and more several times throughout the year. Head to the Valley Community Center to use their free outdoor skating rink, or to Brenton Skating Plaza along the Des Moines River. There are many options for the whole family listed here
