Give us a little background of your family and personal life! How many kids do you have? Have you lived in Des Moines all your life?
I was born and raised in West Des Moines with one younger brother. I was ready for a big change upon graduation and headed out to the University of Pittsburgh for college. I studied accounting and Latin American studies, which included a short term study abroad trip to Chile. During my sophomore year, I met my husband, Andy, there at a party hosted by a mutual friend. We got married shortly after I graduated and lived in Philadelphia where he was in dental school. From there, we did a year in Iowa City, a year and a half in Dubuque, and then finally settled back in Des Moines and have been here 7 years. We have one daughter, Ellie, who is almost 4. We also have two furry kids, a tiny dog named Charlotte and a rabbit named Finnigan.
What is your business, and what do you do?
My business is WellRun Results, LLC, which I launched a little over two years ago with the intent of helping small businesses and non-profits make more profitable decisions. I do this by providing creative financial and data solutions to problems, which can look like anything from survey design and data analysis to tax and financial statement projections.
Why did you become a small business owner?
Honestly, I just felt called to do it. There wasn’t really any logical reason for taking the dive, I just knew that I wanted more flexibility and to be able to choose what I worked on. Something clicked inside that this was a path I needed to explore!
Where is your favorite place to take your children to play indoors?
We hit up the Urbandale Library a lot because it is close to our house. We have also enjoyed the Des Moines Children’s Museum this summer!
Where is your favorite place to take your children to play outdoors?
We go to one of the many playgrounds near our house, there’s several to choose from at Walker Johnston park as well as a smaller one in the middle of our neighborhood.
Parent’s day/night out. Describe your perfect parent only day/night out in Des Moines.
We usually hit up Eatery A or Flying Mango for dinner and then 515 Brewery after or if there’s a good movie out, then we head to Flix Brewhouse so we can do dinner, drinks and a movie in one convenient spot!
What are some tips on juggling parenthood, working, and personal life?
I have found that focusing on my family first is the only way any of it makes sense. I didn’t start my own business to work crazy hours and be stressed out all of the time! The minute work feels like it is taking over, I try to reassess and make sure my family is the priority. It is way too easy as a small business owner to let work take over, I’m learning to have better boundaries and knowing that ultimately, being present with my family is what matters the most.
What is your number one parenting tip?
Be present! They are only little for so long, I really try to focus on just spending time with her and enjoying the little things.
