Minecraft Camp

December 21 – 24

In Minecraft Create, ninjas will build custom objects and import them into their very own Minecraft world! Designed for all ages and levels of experience, this camp provides an excellent environment for your child to edit and model their own 3D objects, practice solving Redstone circuit puzzles, and interact with fellow Minecraft lovers. Minecraft Create features a series of projects utilizing multiple programs and is not textbook-based – it is instead fully guided by our awesome team of Code Senseis®! Minecraft Java account required.

Expedition Space Station

December 28 – 31

Expedition Space Station is a go! Rocket to space in this block coding camp, where ninjas will customize a robot avatar to take on a series of fun spacefaring missions and minigames. As they work together to complete challenges, ninjas will hone their understanding of algorithms, sequences, key-press events, and variables. . . all with the support and guidance of our amazing Code Senseis®!

Winter Break Horse Camp

January 2 ; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Christmas Break day camp!

Fun both on and off horseback, riding, games, a winter cookout (dependent on weather), Snacks, hot cocoa, a scavenger hunt for presents from the horses, and more.

Reservation & waivers required. Spots are reserved with payment. Payment can be made by check, credit, or cash at the stable or through PayPal. No experience necessary. The cost is $80.

Goldie’s Kids Club

Winter Break Kit – Free

Bring the State Historical Museum of Iowa’s winter break activities home with a Winter Break Kit from Goldie’s Kids Club. Members can register for a free kit, which will be mailed to participating households (limit of one per household) and includes activities and materials to keep young minds engaged and to help commemorate Iowa’s upcoming 175th year of statehood.

History Mystery: Live From the Museum Vault

December 28 at 10 a.m.

Join museum staff on Zoom for a virtual version of the History Mystery program during winter break. Register for the new virtual format that brings the museum and its thousands of objects that capture Iowa’s illustrious history directly into every home. Participants will examine artifacts and historic images to determine how they were used and who might have used them.

Create a homemade noisemaker, devour some yummy treats and snuggle up with a storytime book to celebrate winter break from home! Download these digital activities – like the special birthday hat template – to help commemorate Iowa’s upcoming 175th anniversary of statehood. These activities encourage young historians to engage with Iowa history and showcase their creativity with a number of hands-on tasks.

Let it Snow

Ten snowflakes are hiding in the trees on Discovery and Firebreak trails near the Jester Park Nature Center. Take a hike to find as many as you can! Stop at the nature center vestibule for more snowflake fun. Share what you find on social media with #JPSNOW. Please do not remove the snowflakes you find. Leave them for the next person.

Virtual Make it a Science Break

December 28 at 10:30 a.m.

Are you looking for some fun, hands-on, educational activities to keep your curious minds occupied while on break? This program is for you. We’ll discuss several hands on science experiments you can perform at home using common house hold items. We’ll discuss the scientific principles, terms, and vocabulary associated with the activity before demonstrating how to perform the experiment. All the materials and instructions will be posted so you can recreate the activities at a later time.

Virtual Winter Survival

December 29 at 10:30 a.m.

How do animals survive the harsh Iowa winters? We will meet some native wildlife species and learn about their amazing and unique ways to cope with the long cold winters.

Virtual Owls & Pellet Dissection

December 29 at 1 p.m.

Learn about owls of Iowa and their adaptations as predators and their role in the food web via a zoom program. The presentation will be followed by a pellet dissection and analysis. Pick-up your pellet at the Jester Park Nature Center prior to the program so you can dissect your pellet along with the naturalist.

Virtual Rock Me

December 30 at 10:30 a.m.

Learn the basics of geology. We will discuss what rocks are made of, how they are formed, and the three basic rock categories. This program really ROCKS and will get you excited to learn more!

There are several, fun themed days being offered including Historic Holidays, Day in the Life of a Kid, Flynn Family Camp, and more. Check the website and register here before all the spots fill up.

Watch as a Nutritional Health Coach from Natural Grocers makes a batch of sauerkraut, and discuss the history and stages of fermentation. Learn more about the science behind fermentation, including bacteria, lactic acid, and more! We’ll even tell you simple the ingredients you need in case you want to make your own as we go!
