There is always a little gap between the holidays and when our children return to school. Not sure what they will do during those days? Check out some of these great winter break camps for kids in Des Moines. Just like during the summer months summer camp fills quickly, winter camp spaces can fill just as fast. Not only are we sharing fun winter break camp ideas, but fun events and fun activities you can do as an entire family during the wintertime off. Grab a family member and make new friends this winter!

Code Ninjas

Storytelling and Moviemaking in Minecraft®

December 27 – 31

Ninjas will gain an understanding of digital modeling processes and storytelling as they build scenes in their own Minecraft® world. They will also be introduced to video recording, editing, and mixing audio as they produce their final stories as short movies. Using Minecraft® as a creative medium, ninjas will have fun expressing themselves and sharing their stories with friends.

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

December 27 – December 31; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Looking for a fun family experience over winter break? Join the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden for an array of pop-up activities that celebrate the unique beauty and fascinating world of plants through games and crafts (included with admission). In addition, sign-up for various day camps during winter break that offers fun all day long! It is the perfect way to spend winter in Iowa.

Goldie’s Kids Club

Request a kit by December 13.

Bring the State Historical Museum of Iowa’s winter break activities home with a Winter Break Kit. Goldie’s Kids Club members can register to receive a complimentary kit, which includes a variety of fun hands-on activities. The kit will be mailed to participating households (limit of one per household) and includes activity ideas and materials about Iowa’s connections to the movies. Request a Winter Break Kit by Dec. 13 and inspire hours of fun and creativity.

Let it Snow

December 20 – January 3

Ten snowflakes are hiding in the trees on Discovery and Firebreak trails near the Jester Park Nature Center. Take a hike and enjoy this fun scavenger hunt to find as many as you can! Stop at the nature center vestibule for more snowflake fun. Share what you find on social media with #JPSNOW. Please do not remove the snowflakes you find. Leave them for the next person.

Knee-High Naturalists – Winter With the Five Senses

December 21 at 10 a.m.

Are you ready to get outside and explore? Come and hear a story followed by some outdoor fun! As naturalists, we will hike, investigate, and navigate through the trails and grounds of Jester Park as we learn what makes the outdoors such an amazing place. Please come dressed to be outside.

Winter Skills – Air Rifle

December 29; 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t get outdoors. This series will focus on one of the many fun outdoor skills that will get you out of the house and active. You may sign up for one or all of the classes. A naturalist will provide instructions and all equipment provided. Bring a filled water bottle and dress appropriately. A snack and hot cocoa will be provided.

Home for the Holidays

December 28 at 10 a.m.

Explore the different winter habitats for our animal friends here in Iowa! Enjoy storytime and naturalist-led activity to learn more about where different organisms go during the winter months.

Tails By the Fire

Warm-up by the fire with a good book! Enjoy an animal-themed storytime followed by an interactive naturalist-led program to discover what furry friends we can find in Iowa and where to find them.

Snow Birds

December 30 at 10 a.m.

Winter is for the birds…literally! Enjoy a brief program about Iowa’s overwintering birds followed by a winter hike where we will search for our feathered friends. Fun for people of all ages.

Living History Farms

Winter Break Camp

December 28 – 31

Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are offered as 1-day experiences.

Spend a fun winter break exploring life in the past, visiting Living History Farms’ historic sites, and getting busy with hands-on activities. Choose from camps for kids in grades 2-6, or a camp for the whole family including the popular Flynn Family Camp. Register for a fun one-day camp which is a full day of fun, before slots fill up!

Science Center of Iowa

Winter Camps 2021

December 27 – 30

2021 Winter Camps will run from December 27th – December 30th and are open to all young scientists in Pre-K through 8th grade. Register for a full day or half-day camp full of educational activities. Escape the cold and find more ways to explore during Winter Break with SCI Winter Camps! Sci members receive a special discount.

Urbandale Public Library

  • Under Construction Drop-In – December 28; 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Stop by and stack up! We will provide different kinds of materials for you to enjoy stacking and building with like blocks, cups, cardboard tubes, boxes, and more. You move around to different stations at your own pace and build creatively. 
  • Music & Movement – December 29; 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. OR 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Get your groove on and strengthen early literacy skills at the same time! We’ll read one book, but also do plenty of stretching, singing, dancing, rhyming, jumping, and even instrument play. You’ll have a blast helping your little one rock out. Registration is strongly advised.
  • Tween & Teen Breakout Room – December 29 & 30; 3 to 4 p.m. OR 5 to 6 p.m. Experience the “Breakout Room” phenomenon! Come with friends OR make new friends among your fellow escapees. Use creativity and tenacity to work together, think critically, and solve all the puzzles before the time runs out. This program is open to teens and tweens ages 10-17 only, and registration is required.
  • Animal Winter Survival with Polk County Conservation – December 30; 2 to 3 p.m. Join a Polk County Conservation Naturalist as we learn what kind of unique strategies Iowa animals use to survive a harsh winter and shake off the cold. ** No live animals will be present.** Please register.
  • Craft Party Drop-In – December 31; 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tis the season to get crafty. Stop by Meeting Rooms A/B to make some winter-and-celebration-themed crafts! We will have directions and supplies for several crafts; you choose the ones that are right for you. 

Warren County Conservation

December 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Bring the family out to the Annett Nature Center to enjoy a brisk hike down the trail on the longest night of the year. Then return indoors to learn about the winter solstice. We’ll have hot cocoa to warm up with, and then stick around to make a fun winter craft!
