Looking for a quick and unforgettable family getaway close to Des Moines? Pammel State Park in Winterset, Iowa, is the perfect escape for families who love the outdoors. This hidden gem is packed with natural beauty, hands-on nature experiences, and a little adventure around every corner. All just 45 minutes from the metro.

Whether you’re planning a weekend camping trip or a day trip to splash in the ford and hunt for tadpoles, Pammel State Park has something for all ages. Let’s dive into all the reasons you’ll want to add this park to your family’s adventure list!

Camping at Pammel State Park

Pammel State Park offers a well-maintained campground that’s ideal for both first-time campers and seasoned tent-pitchers. Sites include electric hookups, clean restrooms, and scenic surroundings shaded by lush, tall trees. It’s the kind of campground that lets you unwind and truly enjoy nature while still being close enough to grab ice cream in town if needed! We loved our stay with Poppy!

Many families love to set up base camp here and then explore the rest of Winterset during their stay. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows or watching fireflies, it’s the kind of overnight that creates lifelong memories.

Splash, Wade + Catch Tadpoles at the Ford

One of the most unique features of Pammel State Park is its historic shallow river crossing (the ford). Built in the 1920s, the ford serves as the only vehicle access to the park’s west side and doubles as an epic splash zone when river levels are safe. It’s only 2–4 inches deep, making it a perfectly safe spot for kids to wade, play, and hunt for tadpoles. You’ll often see families rolling up their pants and diving into the fun.

Fishing + Kayaking on the Middle River

Bring your fishing poles! Pammel State Park sits along the Middle River, where families can enjoy fishing from the shore or in a kayak. The river is great for beginners and offers easy kayak access. If you’re new to paddling or just want a short float trip, this is a wonderful place to give it a try.

Family-Friendly Hiking Trails

Lace up your hiking shoes and hit the trails! Pammel State Park features several scenic hiking options, but a must-do for families is the Backbone Trail. This trail winds through lush forest and along beautiful limestone ridges, giving you elevated views of the Middle River below. It’s not too long or strenuous, just the right amount of adventure for little legs and nature-loving grownups. The Backbone Trail is just under a mile there and back and is mostly shaded.

Don’t Miss: The Harmon Tunnel

Another Pammel State Park highlight? The Harmon Tunnel, a historic one-lane tunnel carved through a limestone ridge. It’s one of the only tunnels of its kind in Iowa and adds an adventurous twist to your park experience. Drive through slowly and soak in the uniqueness!

NEW! Nature Center

Exciting news for 2025: The new Nature Center at Pammel State Park is expected to open at the end of May! We haven’t had a chance to explore it yet, but it looks incredible and packed with educational displays and hands-on experiences for kids. We can’t wait to go back and check it out!

A Piece of Iowa History

Did you know? Pammel State Park is one of Iowa’s very first state parks, established over 100 years ago. It’s home to some of the oldest and tallest trees in the state, giving it a peaceful, enchanted forest vibe that’s hard to find elsewhere in Central Iowa.

Whether you’re chasing tadpoles, hiking under a canopy of green, or kayaking through a limestone tunnel, Pammel Park offers a one-of-a-kind Iowa adventure. It’s peaceful, playful, and packed with memories waiting to be made.

So pack up the kids, toss in your water shoes and fishing poles, and make a day (or weekend!) of it. This is one family-friendly destination you’ll want to return to again and again.
