Middlebrook Meadow in Cumming, Iowa
Middlebrook Meadow is a tucked away oasis near Cumming, Iowa. This meadow has a maintained trail amidst rolling hills and is a perfect place to soak in the sounds and views of nature. Walking through the meadow was a lovely way to feel like we were escaping the city, but it was only a short drive away. My kids loved opening the Merlin Bird ID app on my phone to see what bird sounds it picked up and if they could find the bird.

The trail through the meadow connects the Great Western Trail and Wilson’s Orchard & Farm. There are three trailheads in the meadow. The Great Western Trailhead is accessible by the Great Western Trail; there is no parking near this trailhead. We parked along the second trailhead, the Coolidge Trailhead, on the gravel road to explore the meadow.

The third trailhead is at Wilson’s Orchard and Farm. At Wilson’s, you can access the Middlebrook Meadow along the trail without paid admission. Paid admission at Wilson’s is only required for the U-Pick farm and Play Barn.

Nearby Middlebrook Meadow
Down the road from Middlebrook Meadow, you will find the very loved Mayor Tom Becker Playground. This farm-themed playground invites kids to use their imagination and move their bodies. This is a favorite park for playdates all summer long.
Wilson’s Orchard Play Barn is also a must-see while checking out the Middlebrook Meadow. The play barn is $6 for ages 3-15, free for under 3 and over 15 (including adults). My kids love this play barn. It is simple, yet inviting. There are risk-taking slides, ropes to climb, hay bales to tower crawl through, unique swings, and a giant corn pool. The last time we went, my kids played for two hours and did not want to leave.

Fridays at the Farm
Kick off your weekend with a relaxing evening at Fridays at the Farm, a beloved summer tradition at Middlebrook Farm. Held every Friday from May through October, this family-friendly event features live music, local food and drink vendors, fresh produce from the farm stand, and plenty of green space for kids to run and play. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, connect with the community, and soak up the small-town charm just minutes from Des Moines.
