Fun Size Finds – A Twist on Consignment Shopping

Dressing your babies is one of the fun parts of being a parent. You get to try styles and colors you would never put on yourself, but it’s a cute mini size, and they actually need new clothes constantly! Just like anything else right now, kids’ clothing is going up in cost, and fast fashion is showing its damage to our landfill and planet.

Sustainability is one way that we, as parents, can show our children we want to do better in caring and consuming. When it comes to clothing, building a majority second-hand wardrobe is another way to consume with care, both in affordability and sustainability. When thrifting, you can spot clothes of higher quality that hold up through wear and wash and snag amazing vintage items. These pieces are the ones that have and will continue to withstand the crawling knees, playground booty sliding, and spaghetti stains from dinner but without a high price point.

One hurdle parents may find with thrifting is carving out the time to browse at a second-hand shop. Online shoppers — we see you! To get out, and dig through the racks for those good pieces, you need time and quite a bit of luck. You may spend an hour and not find the sizes or season you’re hunting for. Enter — your thrifting fairy godmothers.

About Fun Size Finds

Fun Size Finds is a new small business from two mamas – Allie White and Emily Biedenfeld. After months of thrifting for our combined 5 kids, we began to see so many cute clothing options that were in fantastic shape but weren’t in our kids’ sizes/gender. Finding gems at the thrift store is what makes the hunt so thrilling! Some of the best pieces we were seeing were sizes or styles that didn’t fit our kids. Rather than leaving them on the rack or hoarding them for future “maybe babies”, we started sharing our finds!

We dig through thousands of items for the gold pieces. Since we’re shopping for all sizes and genders and cover a multitude of thrift stores around the metro, we are able to source only the best. Maybe you came up short on your trip to a local consignment shop, but by following our Instagram you can snag a fall sweater in your toddler’s size right from our feed (thinking of you again online shoppers!) With Fun Size Finds, we are showcasing the treasure finds that have so much more life in them, and getting them to a new cutie to wear instead of the dumpster.

Before you see the items to shop on our Instagram grid, we inspect, wash, iron, and photograph each piece before listing it for sale. Most of our pieces are in excellent used condition, and some are even new with tags on them. We take the hustle out of thrifting and make it easy and fun to shop second-hand. Our prices average between $5 and $15 and we offer local pickup or shipping. The items we sell drop as small collections on a regular basis following seasons and themes.

What items do we sell?

Some of our top-selling items are vintage overalls, brands like Zara that aren’t available in Des Moines unless you ship, or specialty pieces that you might put on your kids a handful of times and don’t want to pay top dollar for. Since starting this business, we have loved getting to see the cuties dressed in our finds! Some of the pieces are even ones that we’ve put on our babies, so to see them have a little revival with another family is a highlight.

Des Moines has a ton of great thrifting shops and an abundance of kids’ items on the racks. We want to encourage people to get out there themselves and search those racks —  and enjoy the thrill of a good find.
