Free Summer Outdoor Events with Des Moines Performing Arts

Des Moines Performing Arts is back for the fourth year of FREE summer outdoor events and programming for families all over Des Moines, Iowa. This fun series introduces families to different parks and venues in different areas of Des Moines. In addition, it allows families of all ages and backgrounds to experience family-friendly, multi-generational arts and cultural events. The best thing is that all performances are free! Take a look at all the upcoming free outdoor events and programming happening this summer.

Tips Before You Go!

Here are some family-friendly tips before you head to this summer’s free outdoor family programming with Des Moines Performing Arts.

  • Bring a blanket or folding chair. These shows pop up in the park. There may be some park benches nearby but typically fill quickly. Make sure you bring your seating.
  • Pack a picnic! No food or drink will be sold during the performances. Pack your favorite snacks and enjoy a picnic while you watch the performance.
  • Make a day of it! Many of these performances are scheduled in Des Moines metro parks that offer tons of fun. Come for the show, then stay and play.

May 2 – 26 in Downtown Des Moines

Get ready to light up your spring! OPTIK is taking over Cowles Commons with a one-of-a-kind interactive light and sound experience. Picture this: 20 giant, glowing gyroscope-like sculptures that turn into musical instruments you can play! It’s art, music, and a whole lot of hands-on fun for the whole family.

Don’t miss the grand opening celebration on May 2!

Bindlestiff Family Cirkus

June 14-17

Get ready for jaw-dropping fun the whole family will love! The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus is rolling into town, bringing high-energy juggling, acrobatics, contortion, and all the classic circus magic — with a touch of old-school vaudeville charm.
Catch their incredible (and free!) performances at parks across the Des Moines metro:

  • June 15, 10:30 AM – Walker Johnston Park, Urbandale
  • June 15, 6:30 PM – Columbus Park, Des Moines
  • June 16, 6:30 PM – City Park, Norwalk

This 10-piece “Eclectic Soul” band blends jazz, hip-hop, and R&B into one unforgettable performance.

Storytime Under the Green Umbrella

Get ready for a morning filled with songs, stories, and lots of giggles! Perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and early elementary kiddos, this fun and interactive series is led by the awesome educators from Des Moines Performing Arts.

Bonus: If it rains, no worries — they will move the fun inside to the Nollen Lobby at the Des Moines Civic Center!
