There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day in Des Moines. You can do something as simple as grabbing a trash bag and adventuring on a walk in your neighborhood to pick up trash or plant a tree. Earth Month

April 1 – 30

Greater Des Moines Metro

Thanks to volunteer safety protocols several cities and citizens have come together to create opportunities spread out through the Metro for small groups to volunteer while being physically distanced over multiple dates in April-Earth Month. They will help you plan ahead, protect yourself and provide you opportunities to give back to make the Metro a great place to live, work and play again! Take a look at the details and register.

Joppa Outreach Community Cleanup

Saturday, April 2

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. & 2 to 5 p.m.

Calling all business owners, community leaders, teachers, and churches! On April 2, join us and register your group for Joppa Community Cleanups to help make a difference in Des Moines. Joppa is a nonprofit that helps homeless people survive by providing supplies and services 52 weeks a year. Because of this, we feel it’s important to play a role in keeping our community clean, too. Recycling Story Time With Metro Waste Authority

Johnston Public Library

Bring the kiddos to “do the twist” with Metro Waste Authority! Learn all about recycling plastics with twist-off lids during this fun-filled, interactive storytime!

This storytime is geared for kids ages 2-5, but all ages are welcome!

Earth Day 2022

Jester Park Nature Center

Join Polk County Conservation for lunch and a social hour to meet other volunteers before you learn all the ways you can positively impact your local environment from our corner of the world with Polk County Conservation. Following lunch, learn how you can become a steward of the land and get your hands dirty in invasive species removal, native garden maintenance, or litter cleanup projects as we celebrate this place we call home. Registration is required. All ages and abilities are welcome.

Earth Day Family 5k Run/Walk

Saturday, April 23

10 a.m. to Noon

Polk City, Iowa

Join Polk City Friends of the Parks for the first annual Earth Day Family 5K Run/Walk! Join them in enhancing, growing, and supporting the Polk City parks, trails, and greenspaces. Participate in a fun run, kids activities on the square, and the first 100 5k participants will receive a free tree seedling & a reusable cup. All participants will be entered into a raffle for fun prizes!

Extraordinary Egg Hunt & Earth Day Celebration

Saturday, April 23

8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Lauridsen Amphitheater

Come to help Water Works Park clean up the park, hunt some extraordinary eggs, do some Egg Yoga, and celebrate Earth Day weekend. Hunt starts at 8 am. To prevent egg hoarding issues (1 per person please)- Plastic eggs will be playing the role of the real eggs but can be redeemed for the REAL thing at the registration tables the day of the event.
Hunt areas at the pedestrian bridge and the amphitheater areas (amp area suggested for the younger hunters and those who have trouble on uneven ground).

  • Activities: 8:00 am – 2:00 pm
  • Egg Hunt and trash pick up
  • Chalk Drawing at Community Foundation Concourse

Earth Day at the Arboretum

The Brenton Arboretum

Celebrate Earth Day together at the Arboretum! Drop in whenever you’d like on Saturday, April 23, and take advantage of these activities:

  • Sunrise Yoga at Labyrinth; 6:30 am ($10)
  • Sunset Yoga at Labyrinth; 7 pm ($10)
  • Tai Chi at Vista Room lawn; 2 pm ($10)

Please bring exact change for the yoga and tai chi classes.

Free Activities between 11 am & 2 pm at the Administration Building:

  • Make & Take Craft Kit (while supplies last)
  • Tai Chi Demonstrations (11-1 pm)
  • Iowa DNR Exhibit (11-1 pm)
  • Guided Hikes with Melissa Burdick between noon & 2 pm, begin every 30 minutes

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

This event will be the culmination of the Botanical Garden’s focus on the water during the month of April. The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden hopes to focus on the connection between plants and water by highlighting plants are essential to clean water, gardens and landscapes should support water conservation, and plants can thrive in wet areas and should be embraced where appropriate.

Earth Day Story Sprouts

10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Join the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden for this fun, interactive storytime for children ages 2 to 5 that explores nature and plants. During each program, participants will enjoy stories and activities based on the week’s theme. Story Sprouts is geared toward children ages 2-5. Pre-registration is not required.

Earth Day Trail Clean Up

Saturday, April 23

8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Warren County Conservation and Annett Nature Center

In celebration of Earth Day, Warren County Conservation will be hosting a trail cleanup along the Great Western Trail. Gloves, garbage bags, and water will be provided by Siegwerk. They have partnered with The Chicken in Orilla and they have graciously allowed parking in their lot during the event. After the event grab a bite to eat at The Chicken with your 10% off coupon. Please register by April 20, 2022, to make sure there are enough supplies and coupons. This event is a partnership with The Chicken and Siegwerk.

Earth Day Family Fun

Saturday, April 23

10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

West Des Moines City Hall  

Earth Day is a perfect day for you and your family to come to the West Des Moines City Hall campus to enjoy some family-friendly outdoor activities. You can go kayaking, canoeing, fishing, create a themed craft, and play some yard games. Free tree saplings will be handed out, and the first 100 families will receive a Painted Lady caterpillar. Come help the West Des Moines Parks & Recreation celebrate Earth Day! Free for the entire family.
