There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day in Des Moines this year. Check out the list below for some fun ideas. A couple of events require pre-registration. Make sure to register. If I am missing your Earth Day event, let me know

Earth Day

Saturday, April 18

8:30 a.m. to Noon 

Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge

In honor of Earth Day, volunteers are invited to help restore the prairie and oak savanna ecosystems. Families, individuals, and groups are welcome to participate. A FREE lunch will be provided by the Friends of Neal Smith NWR for volunteers that pre-registration. The deadline for pre-registration is April 15. To pre-register, email or call 515-994-3400.

Downtown Earth Day

Saturday, April 18

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Celebrate the eighth annual Downtown Earth Day Tour with a visit to the Botanical Garden and the Science Center of Iowa. Learn more about the environment and a host of community organizations that use sustainable practices. This event is free to the public at the Botanical Garden thanks to the generosity of the Principal Foundation. The Science Center will offer $5 admission. Enjoy a short walk or bike ride between locations. Drop-in activities from community partners will be offered at each location.

Earth Day Family Fun

10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

West Des Moines City Hall  

2020 is the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, making it a perfect day for you and your family to enjoy some family-friendly outdoor activities. You can go kayaking, canoeing, or fishing. You may choose to create an earth-friendly craft or relax in our outdoor lounge and enjoy a cup of coffee or hot cocoa. The first 100 families will receive a free Painted Lady caterpillar (one per family) and free tree saplings will be handed out.

This year’s event will also include a public art reveal on the pond and chalk art that focuses on water quality. Come learn all about what you can do to help love our earth every day!

Des Moines Parks and Recreation

Earth Day Trash Bash, Iowa’s largest Earth Day volunteer event, is a collaborative project between the Cities & citizens of Des Moines, West Des Moines, Clive, Norwalk, Pleasant Hill, Johnston, Urbandale, Polk County Conservation, Polk Soil, and Water Conservation District, West Side Chamber of Commerce, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, Ingersoll Business Committee, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden and Water Works.

Thanks to corporate commitment to a better environment and a healthier community, in 2019, they had 93 volunteer teams at 75 project locations throughout the greater Des Moines metro.  Volunteers remove litter, beautify public lands and clean out invasive species. They removed almost 45,000 pounds of trash, recyclables, tires, metal, and brush, along with almost 12 pounds of cigarette butts, recycled more than 9,572 plastic bags, cleaned more than 10 miles of trails, cleared 7.5 acres of invasive species, moved more than 100 cubic yards of mulch and more.
