Earth Day in Des Moines 2019

There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day in Des Moines this year. Check out the list below for some fun ideas. A couple of events require pre-registration. Make sure to register. If I am missing your Earth Day event, let me know

Earth Day Trash Bash

Friday, April 19 (rain date April 22) 

Noon to 5 p.m.  

Des Moines Parks and Recreation

This small event has quickly grown over the years. It began with a few individuals and has quickly grown into a collaborative project between several cities and individuals. The event will kick-off at noon for food, music, and educational booths. Afterward, team captains will lead the volunteers to the different project locations across Des Moines to pick up trash.

The Metro Area is divided into volunteer project locations. Due to the size of this volunteer project, you must register with a team. Deadline for Captains to register is March 30.

Earth Day 2019

Saturday, April 20

8:30 a.m. to Noon 

Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge

In honor of Earth Day, we invite volunteers to help us restore prairie and oak savanna ecosystems. During this event, volunteers will participate in stewardship activities. Groups and individuals are welcome. FREE lunch provided by the Friends of Neal Smith NWR. Pre-registration is REQUIRED by April 17. Call 515-994-3400 or email to register.

Earth Day Stream Clean Up

Saturday, April 20 

8 a.m. to Noon 

Windsor Heights Community Center

Meet at the Windsor Heights Community Center for a short presentation. Volunteers will be divided into designated clean-up groups. Designated Areas of Focus:

  • I-235 to Walmart
  • CityWide Heating and Cooling to College Drive Bridge
  • College Drive Bridge to Hickman Bridge

Downtown Earth Day

Saturday, April 20

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Celebrate Earth Day at the Downtown Earth Day Tour, a collaboration between the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, the Science Center of Iowa and Iowa Rivers Revival.

Free admission all day at the Botanical Garden is sponsored by Principal. The Botanical Garden is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; activities run 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Science Center of Iowa is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with $5 admission.

Earth Day Family Fun

Saturday, April 20

10 a.m. to Noon 

Located near the West Des Moines Library/Pond area 

Earth Day is a perfect day for you and your family to come to enjoy some family-friendly outdoor activities. You can go kayaking, canoeing, fishing or you may choose to create a small paddle boat or relax in our outdoor lounge and enjoy a cup of coffee or cocoa! Free tree saplings will be handed out to celebrate this Earth Day Event. The first 100 families will receive a painted lady caterpillar to raise.

Earth Day Stories on the Patio

Monday, April 22

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Jester Park Nature Center

Celebrate Earth Day with a local storyteller on the outdoor patio at the Jester Park Nature Center. FREE. No registration required.

Edible Earth Day Crafts

Monday, April 22

1 to 2 p.m. 

Grimes Public Library 

Join the Grimes Public Library as you create edible Earth Day crafts at the library.

Sit down with your children and fill out this fun worksheet. Click on the image to download + print your own!
