There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day in Des Moines this year. Check out the list below for some fun ideas. A couple of events require pre-registration. Make sure to register. If I am missing your Earth Day event, let me know

Earth Month

April 1 – 30

Greater Des Moines Metro

Thanks to volunteer safety protocols several cities and citizens have come together to create opportunities spread out to thru the Metro for small groups to volunteer while being physically distanced over multiple dates in April-Earth Month. They will help you plan ahead, protect yourself and provide you opportunities to give back to make the Metro a great place to live, work and play again! Take a look at the details and register here.

Pollinator Parade

April 7 – April 21

In conjunction with Friends of Des Moines Parks, Science Center of Iowa, and Blank Park Zoo they have created a pollinator-themed scavenger hunt located throughout Des Moines, Iowa. Locate the artwork and pollinator Q & A signs at each site, snap a photo, and share using any or all of the following hashtags on your favorite social media platform! There is even a chance to win prizes. Take a look at all the details and how to participate here.

Ankeny Earth Day Stream & Watershed Cleanup

Saturday, April 17

8 to 11 a.m.

Ankeny, Iowa

Ankeny residents are invited to give back to the community by volunteering at the annual Earth Day Stream/Watershed Cleanup event on Saturday, April 17, 2021, from 8 – 11 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help clean the ponds and wetlands around Promenade Park in The District at Prairie Trail. Check out all the details.

Free Admission – Greater Botanical Garden

10 a.m. t0 5 p.m.

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Celebrate Earth Day with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Learn about indoor plants that help create a healthy home. Practice plant propagation and take a cutting home with you!

Groups work at their own pace and socially distance. Masks are required for all visitors two years and older. Capacity will be limited to no more than 15 people at one time with sanitizing in between each person and/or group. Pre-registration is not required. Activity is available while supplies last. Purchase a timed ticket for admission into the garden here.

Earth Day Trash Bash

Saturday, April 24

Warren County Conservation and Annett Nature Center

Come out to Swamp White Oak, near Norwalk, to join in on a trash-bash clean-up. Cleanups like this help reduce waste and plastic pollution, which help improve habitats, prevent harm to wildlife and humans, help improve water quality and contribute to a healthier community overall. This is a great opportunity to get involved, get to know Warren County Park, and be a part of a bigger movement.

Earth Day Family Fun

Saturday, April 24

10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

West Des Moines City Hall  

Earth Day is a perfect day for you and your family to come to enjoy some family-friendly outdoor activities. You can go kayaking, canoeing, or fishing. You may choose to create an earth-friendly craft and enjoy a cup of cider or hot cocoa. The first 100 families will receive a free Painted Lady caterpillar (one per family) and free tree saplings will be handed out. Come learn all about what you can do to help love our earth every day!

For all ages. FREE!
