Dewey Park in Johnston, Iowa

Dewey Park, located in Johnston, Iowa, is a favorite shady park with large trees, recently got a fun, new revamp! The nature-themed playground equipment for 5- to 12-year-olds invites kids to play and explore. My kids love discovering all the ways to climb up and chase each other through the playground. They enjoy the slides spread throughout the structure for quick dismounts. The main playground features a play tree to climb and hide in the treehouse, which is an absolute favorite for my kids who love pretending.

In the center of the new revamped area which features rubber tiles, there is an obstacle course for kids who love monkey bars and physical challenges. My kids love having me time them to see how long it takes them to complete the loop. Near the obstacle course, there is a wave climbing wall and wide, plastic saucer swing.

Dewey Park also has a separate area for 2- to 5-year-olds with wood chips. This traditional area includes a smaller playground structure for younger children, a tire swing, playhouse, bouncers, and swings (both infant bucket seats and traditional swings). While this area wasn’t part of the revamp, kids who enjoy a quieter space tend to drift here.

Located Near Dewey Park

When you head to Johnston to check out Dewey Park, make sure you leave time to stop at Van Dee’s Ice Cream just a mile away. It is always worth a visit! (Remember it is open seasonally and only takes cash.)

Less than a mile away from Dewey Park, the Johnston Library is one of our favorite places to check out. We love the staff there and all of the little play activities out for kids. If we have time too, we always like checking out the all-inclusive playground behind the library, Johnston Commons Playground.
