CORNival Family Fall Festival With Altoona’s Arts & Culture Commission!

Sharing is caring!

Altoona is a growing community that offers many ways to eat, play, and stay. As this community grows, so does the need for community connection. One way Altoona is making big waves is through the Altoona Arts and Culture Commission.

Family Fall Festival: Saturday, September 23rd from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM – Intrinsic Ag – 102 1st Ave N, Altoona, IA

What is CORNival?

Though a fairly new city commission, the Arts and Culture Commission dreamt big this summer with their first large-scale, summer long celebration called CORNival. But what are they celebrating? CORNival marks the 100 year anniversary of the first hybrid seed corn which was planted in Altoona. This accomplishment had a hand in impacting and shaping the agricultural industry locally and globally and is certainly something to celebrate! It is Iowa after all, and what is more true to Iowa than corn and the farmers who plant it? To celebrate this community milestone the Arts and Culture Commission planned up the CORNvoy; A Tour of Corn. This CORNvoy is made up of 20 giant, fiberglass, corncob statues painted by local artists who submitted designs and were selected to complete their masterpieces earlier this year.

There have been several events over the past few months starting with their kick-off celebration at Haines park on 4th of July, Cornhole with Brightside Aleworks, to collaboration with RAGBRAI’s pass through Altoona, an educational presentation with Liz Garst at the Altoona Public Library, and a lot of team work with city parks and recreation and other event organizers like Altoona Palooza! At each community event the CORNvoy has been present and even made a traveling tour to various businesses this summer. Perhaps you were lucky to drive by, visit an event, or even get a selfie with one of the statues! Learn more about the CORNvoy here!

What are they up to now?

Since Altoona Mayor, Dean O’Conner, proclaimed that summer 2023 is the season of CORNival, the Arts and Culture Commission saw it only made sense to honor not only ‘knee high by July’ but to offer a fall festival to the community and surrounding areas to harvest the good feelings the events have brought to the Altoona Community. This capstone event, Family Fall Festival will take place at Intrinsic Ag – 102 1st Ave N, Altoona, IA on Saturday, September 23rd from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
