This past weekend was gorgeous and it really felt like the beginning of summer. The kids and I spent the entire weekend outdoors, including an afternoon at Big Creek State Park.

Big Creek is located just off of Saylorville Lake near Polk City. I had not been to Big Creek in ages, but I distinctly remembered the large, wooden castle playground. The park is not a far trip from where we live, so I knew it was a must-see. We packed up our lunches, towels, sand toys, waters, and sunscreen. We then headed off for an afternoon to play in the sun and water.

When we arrived, I had planned to eat first since it was just about lunch time but the kids were too excited when they saw the playground. They were off very quickly to run, play and explore. Shortly, they returned to chow down on their peanut butter & jelly sandwiches and our favorite Stonyfield Smooth & Creamy Whole Milk yogurt. I had brought along fresh cut strawberries. It was a delicious combo!

It was a hot day, but I knew the water temperature would not be warm enough to swim, so we did not bring our swimsuits. I wore my very cool and comfy Amelie Dress from prAna and organic headband. I absolutely love prAna’s clothing and their mission. I love being able to enjoy, relax and be present with my family all while wearing sustainable and relaxing clothing from prAna. I do not have to worry about what I look like, or if something fits comfortably. I can spend my time outdoors enjoying my family.

The playground is made of wood, tires and metal. Be careful with the slides, they get very hot when it is a super sunny day. Monte enjoyed doing the different courses that included balancing and climbing up rope ladders. The entire playground is full of different activities.

After the kids ran around and got themselves all sweaty, we decided to take a walk down to the water to run, stomp and splash. The playground is pretty much on the beach, but there are a few yards from the playground and the actual water. This is great if you have little ones who like to jolt off. There is enough room to catch them or they may be too preoccupied by the playground it may not be an issue.

Once we hit the water I quickly regretted not bringing swimsuits, but the kids had a blast playing in the wet sand and splashing in the water. The beach area is huge. When summer gets in full swing we definitely will be returning with suits and life jackets.

The entire area is very clean and offers three huge shelters and a few smaller shelters. There are lots of picnic tables available, plug-ins located in the shelters, clean bathrooms, a walking trail, a large green space, and much more. There were a few birthday parties going on while we were there. You can also rent paddle boats and fish. Take a look at a full list of activities here.

I highly recommend planning a family day at Big Creek State Park. Make sure you pack your favorite Stonyfield yogurt for lunch and wear your comfy prAna clothing. Interested in ordering something from prAna? Use my discount code WHOLES17DMP for 15% off. Code is good through the end of May.

  1. It never fails that my kids go in the water no matter what the temperature is. Last week we went hiking and my kids had no problems wading in the creek that was frigid from the mountain snow run off. SUper cute dress! Perfect for hanging out with the kiddos!
