Honey Creek Resort | Perfect Family Destination For All Seasons

Honey Creek Resort on Rathbun Lake, is the perfect family trip for all seasons in Iowa.

Honey Creek Resort, Iowa, Family trip

A couple of weeks ago our family had the opportunity to experience everything Honey Creek Resort has to offer. Although it was the beginning of spring and not everything was available to experience, it was still the perfect long weekend getaway.

Honey Creek Resort is located about 1 hour and 45 minutes south of Des Moines and is a gorgeous drive. Not too long at a beautifulĀ location in southern Iowa. We hopped in our car on a Friday and stayed the entire weekend, returning on Monday.

There are two ways you can experience Honey Creek Resort. You can stay in a hotel room within the Lodge or you can stay in one of their spacious cottages. Our family decided to spend the weekend in a two bedroom cottage which was perfect! It had a full kitchen, bunk beds for the kids, two bathrooms, fireplace, wrap around porch, fire pit and grill. We were able to make the Honey Creek cottage our home away from home.

The highlight of the trip was the Buccaneer Bay Indoor Water Park. It was perfect for our kiddos. It offered fun attractions including a water slide, lazy river, hot tub, basketball hoop and more. None of the swimming areas were deeper than 3 ft. This was perfect, so we were able to relax while our children splashed and played. Honey Creek Resort offers a beach and Aquapark that are open during the Summer months. We cannot wait to return to check it out.

Of course, we spent our time hiking and exploring nature. We stayed the first weekend of Spring Break and it was the first warmer weekend in a long time! It was great to get out and enjoy some fresh air. We played on the playground, discovered animal tracks, awesome sticks, and played frisbee. Visiting in the Winter? They offer sledding, ice skating, ice bikes, outdoor hockey, snowshoeing during the Winter months.

Honey Creek Resort also offers a nature center on the premises. During the weekend and other scheduled times, they offer fun crafts and activities. We enjoyed making Egg Grass Heads, saw turtles native to Iowa, played in a sensory bin and saw lots of different animal fur. There were a couple of naturists on hand to ask questions. The event calendar is a great place to keep track of all the fun that is happening at Honey Creek Resort. You can also check out ‘Field Packs’ which are a great way to guide you and your family to discover nature.

The entire resort is filled with bike trails. Make sure you bring your bike or borrow a bike from Honey Creek Resort for free. You can jump on your bike to go to the playground, indoor aquatic center, restaurant, or nature center. The kids brought their scooters around and had a blast rolling around reading all the signs about plants and looking for birds.

Since we stayed in our own cottage that offered a full kitchen, we did not get a chance to visit theĀ on-site restaurant, Rathbun Lakeshore Grille Restaurant. If you are traveling with kids, the cottages are the way to go! We packed up snacks, I premade a breakfast casserole, brought cinnamon rolls, muffins, burgers to grill out, and more. We also enjoyed a night of making s’mores around our campfire. We also spent some great family time watching a movie (they offer DirectTV) and playing games that I brought along.

Summer, Winter, Spring or Fall, Honey Creek Resort is a great place to visit all year round.
