U-Pick Flowers – Flower Farms in the Des Moines Area

Is there anything better than fresh-cut flowers in a home? The colors, the smell … a beautiful bouquet of flowers is one of my favorite things to brighten up our home. While it is super easy to grab some flowers at the store, our family loves fresh cut flowers from local flower farms in the Des Moines area. Many have begun popping up that provide hundreds of seasonal flowers to cute, special events, and more. We have gathered some of our favorite flower farms in the greater Des Moines area below. Bochner Farms

Address: 17072 88th Ave, Indianola, IA 50125

Bochner Farms offers U-pick experiences and garden parties that require a ticket. They also offer flower bar options and bouquet subscriptions! 

Center Grove

Address: 32835 610th Avenue, Cambridge, IA 50046

Center Grove Orchard is much more than an orchard and pumpkin patch. They offer a sunflower meadow from late summer to early fall (August through October). Admission into the meadow for pictures and picking is included in general Farmyard admission. There is an additional cost for flowers you pick to take home.  

Deals Orchard

Address: 1102 244th St., Jefferson, IA 50129

If sunflowers are your thing, head to Deals Orchard in early September to explore their giant sunflower field. They have a 1.5-acre sunflower field and can cut some to take with them for an additional cost. You do need to pay for the price of admission but also includes Apple Acres. Keep an eye on their social media page for flower updates. 

Howell’s Greenhouse & Pumpkin Patch

Address: 3145 Howell Court, Cumming, IA 50061

Join our favorite family farm Howell’s Greenhouse & Pumpkin Patch for a special Flower Festival featuring Sunflowers! Howell’s is always full of beautiful flowers. This special event requires admission and allows attendees to wander through the brightly colored flowers, fun picture opportunities, access to the play yard, wagon ride, bathtub train, see the goats, and a ton more. Blooming dates are not guaranteed, but they post weekly, often daily, pictures of the flower fields on their social media through peak season.

Iowa Flower Farm

Address: 11520 NE 110th Ave, Maxwell, IA 50161

The Iowa Flower Farm is located NE of Bondurant, Iowa next to the Chichaqua Valley wildlife preserve. The growing season always differ so make sure to follow their social media page for updates when their flower garden are ready for picking! Bring a bucket to take your flowers home. They do provide cutters and gloves but recommend you to bring your own if you have some. 

2023 U-Pick Hours: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m., and Thursdays for snip and sip from 4 to 8 p.m. 

Jester Hill Flower Farm

Address: 12430 Northwest 128th Street, Madrid, Iowa

Jester Hill Flower Farm is located right near one of our favorite parks, Jester Park. You will love to pick these local flowers. They focus on growing multiple-cut flower varieties and lavender. They offer vases for cost and clippers.

2023 U-Pick Hours: Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and every Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Middlebrook Farm

Address: 4300 Cumming Ave, Cumming, IA 50061

Pick your own flowers is new to Middlebrook Farm! Visitors are invited to grab supplies from the farm stand including shears, rubber bands, cups, and water. Then head out to the flower beds and simply look for signs to help identify which flowers you can choose from:

  • Snapdragons ($1/stem)
  • Gomphrena (20 stems for $5)
  • Yarrow (15 stems for $5)

They accept cash in their drop box or pay via Venmo. Details are in the farm stand.

PepperHarrow Farm

Address: 1809 S 4th Ave, Winterset, IA 50273

There are many ways to experience this beautiful lavender farm in Madison County. Pepperharrow is a twenty-acre flower farm and does not offer regular u-pick hours, but they do offer several classes and events that invite people to come experience the farm and flower gardens such as Bloom Bar Sunday, VIP Sunset Farm Tour, Floral Design Workshops, and more. The owners are Master Gardener and use sustainable practices. 

You can also find PepperHarrow fresh blooms in local Des Moines shops such as Gateway Market and Des Moines Mercantile. 

Rose Farm

Address: 7197 43rd Ave, Norwalk, IA 50211

The Rose Farm located in Norwalk, Iowa offers beautiful flowers but also a ton of events and classes including table dinners, candlemaking, watercolor workshops, and so much more. One of our family’s favorite events is Farm School! This FREE class is designed to give children a front-row seat to a modern farmstead. Each week during the Summer is a new theme. After Farm School stick around and wander the garden area, and farmstead, do some shopping, and do not leave without flowers of course! 

Willow Flower Farm

Address: 5119 Harding St, Prole, IA 50229

Willow Flower Farm offers u-pick flowers and bouquet subscriptions. When you arrive you can choose from two different containers, grab your clippers, and start picking! It is recommended to bring your own flower container to transport your flowers home in. Families are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy some time on the farm before or after picking flowers.
