Des Moines Fall Festivals 2021

The leaves will begin changing colors and temperatures will be dropping, which means fall is time for some fall festivities. I  have created a list of Fall Festivals in the Des Moines area. If I am missing your favorite festival please let me know.


Apple Festival at Penoach Winery 

September 18

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Horse and wagon rides, face painting and balloon animals, vendors featuring a variety of crafts, food, and produce. Live music from Brick ‘n Bob starting at 1 p.m.

World Food & Music Festival

September 17-19

The 2021 festival features Cuisine from Around the World. Live entertainment, cooking demonstrations. $1 tastes/all entrees $6 or less. Free to attend.

Vintage and Made Fair

September 18

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Dallas County Fairgrounds

Support multiple local vendors at this handmade, vintage market. Shop vintage home décor, jewelry, handcrafted goods, outdoor accents, seasonal items, food trucks, live music, and everything you need to create a vintage and handmade lifestyle. Never too early to begin holiday shopping!


September 25

9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Living History Farms

Join us for a day of family fun celebrating the apple harvest season!

Visit our historic sites to see how past cooks would prepare and serve apple treats, such as apple butter, cake or pie, and cider. Print an apple recipe in the print shop, and purchase apple goodies and tasty treats from local food vendors.

Apple & Pumpkin Fest at Will’s Family Orchard 

Saturday, September 18 (9 – 6 p.m.) & Sunday, September 19 (Noon – 6 p.m.)

Saturday, September 25 (9 – 6 p.m.) & Sunday, September 26 (Noon – 6 p.m.)

 On-farm Store, u-pick apples, u-pick pumpkins, gourds, beautiful mums, apple cider donuts, orchard-fresh food, & Green Acres Fun Farm. Their friendly barnyard animals (chickens, goats, and 3 little pigs) will be there to greet you when you visit.

Illumifest at WDM City School Campus

September 25; 4 to 9 p.m.

West Des Moines City Hall 

Starting at 4:00 pm, enjoy fare for purchase from on-site food vendors as well as a wide array of FREE family-friendly activities, including:

  • Hot air balloon rides
  • Airbrush tattoos
  • Balloon artist
  • Inflatables
  • Circus performances
  • WDM Community Band performance
  • Bingo
  • Paper lantern painting

At 7:00 pm Faculty Lounge will take the Jamie Hurd Amphitheater stage for a free concert. Be sure to stick around until the end to enjoy a fireworks display to close out the evening.


Fall Fest at Middlebrook Farm

October 2

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Save the date for the annual Fall Fest at Middlebrook Farm! They will have live music, food trucks, farmers’ market, face painting, pumpkin decorating, and more!

Raccoon River Rally

October 2

Noon to 6 p.m.

The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and the City of West Des Moines are excited to announce the inaugural Raccoon River Rally presented by Google Fiber scheduled for October 2, 2021. This is a FREE family-friendly, rain or shine event and everyone is invited!

Raccoon River Rally is the first fall festival of its kind at Raccoon River Park celebrating WDM’s community and waters. Attractions for the event include a morning bike ride, live music, cardboard boat races, a vendor fair with fun activities for kids, a beer tent featuring craft beer from Kinship Brewing Co., and food trucks.

Covered Bridge Festival in Madison County 

October 9 & 10

Help celebrate the bridges. Crafts, foods, activities, entertainment, antiques, and guided tours of the famous covered bridges. This festival is for everyone.

Deal’s Orchard Fall Festival

October 9-10

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Live entertainment, apple pies, and dumplings, corn pit, animals, jumping pillow, horse-drawn hayrides, pumpkin patch, paint pumpkins, spin art, giant slides, and so much more.

Grimes Fall Festival

October 16

9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Grimes South Sports Complex

Grimes Parks and Recreation are joining forces with Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa to put on ”Fall Festival” on October 16th. There will be Polk County Sheriff’s candy crawl, food trucks, vendors, booths, and loads of candy. Free to everyone!

Erin Huiatt

Erin is a reliable resource and stepping stone for women and families to find support and make connections within our community. She wants families to feel confident to reach out and ask for help and advice to get pointed in the right direction. She enjoys traveling and exploring with her two children in tow!
