A Des Moines classic event is celebrating its 23rd year! Yankee Doodle Pops will be back providing great music and an amazing firework display afterwards over the Des Moines skyline!
When: Friday, July 1st
Times: Des Moines Symphony performs at 8:30 p.m.
Turner Center Jazz Orchestra with Tina Haase Findlay begins at 6:30 p.m.
Where: West Terrace of the Iowa State Capitol
The Orchestra will perform on a stage facing the Capitol (off of E. Locust and E. 7th/Penn)
Fireworks will be launched from the Grand Avenue Bridge over the downtown skyline.
Cost: FREE!
This year, music director & conductor Joseph Giunta and the musicians of the Des Moines Symphony, will perform the the Sound of America program. This program includes sights and sounds of our wonderful country. Hugh Panero, from the Phantom of the Opera, is back to sing songs from The Music Man and West Side Story along with some patriotic classics including the 1812 Overture with live Howitzer cannons.
As always, the winner of the “Oh Say, You Can Sing?”competition will open the evening with the Star-Spangled Banner. The winner of this competition is selected on June 25th at another Des Moines classic event, the Des Moines Arts Festival!
Bring at least two non-perishable items to help fill the Food Bank of Iowa with the eighth annual Yankee Doodle Drive Against Hunger: A Symphony of Caring. When you donate, you will receive a discount coupon to a Des Moines Symphony 2016-2017 Season Masterworks Concert. The food drop-off location during the event is on Finkbine Drive (located between the stage and the Capitol).
