Today I decided it was time for my little 5 year old chef to prepare the food for afternoon snack time. Earlier in the day I had noticed my wife had purchased some chop sticks for the kids so I thought sushi would be a fun snack to eat. Of course my kids probably wouldn’t even try real sushi, so we had to make a kid’s version. After throwing out a few options to my daughter, she decided we would have 3 different types of sushi.
1. Peanut Butter and Grape Jelly Sushi
2. Turkey Stick, Ranch & Shredded Cheddar Cheese Sushi
3. Cheese Stick and Turkey Lunch Meat & Mayo Sushi
Preparation was pretty easy for all three types. We used soft tortillas for the outer wrapping and my daughter put it all together and rolled them up. I had to help with the cutting a little bit, but other than that it was all her. She had so much fun putting them together. After she was all done the real test came. Normally my daughter will eat most snacks (especially if she makes them), but little brother tends to be a little more picky. But much to my amazement he dug right in. He really loved the Peanut Butter and Jelly sushi (warning a bit messy). Plus both kids really loved eating with the chopsticks. So it was a win, win all around. They had fun, had a snack and worked on their motor skills using the chopsticks all in one activity.
So the next time you want to shake up snack time a bit, try making your own kid’s version of sushi.
