You will not want to miss San Jose Taiko, contemporary Japanese drumming!
On Saturday, May 14th at 1 pm families of all ages, are invited to the Des Moines Civic Center to be a part of another fantastic show. San Jose Taiko is a part of the Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series presented by Des Moines Performing Arts.
Taiko, the Japanese word for drum and also used to describe the art form of kumidaiko (ensemble drumming with Japanese drums). Inspired by traditional Japanese, performers express the beauty and harmony of the music spirit through the taiko. Not only will the perform traditional rhythms but they will combine other world rhythms including: African, Brazilian, Fillipino, Latina and Jazz.
This will be a fun performance full of music, dance, and rhythm!
Make sure you do not miss the Discovery Party before the show. You can join others in the Civic Center lobby for a pre-performance event that will include art-making activities, demonstrations, and other fun!
On May 12th from 6 pm – 7 pm families Des Moines Performing Arts is offering an interactive drumming workshop! Parents and children will learn the basics of San Jose Taiko-style drumming. The workshop costs only $5 and is open to families attending the San Jose Taiko performance on Saturday, May 14th at 1:00 p.m. The children who participate should be at least 8 years old and should be accompanied by a parent or adult.
