Sacred Health Birth Services

Sharing is caring!

Sacred Health Birth Services in Des Moines, Iowa

All you have to do is pull up to the entrance and you know – this is not your standard medical clinic. Sure, it’s nestled in a shopping center, tucked behind a cell phone store, and across the street from Cambell’s Nutrition, Freidrich’s Coffee shop, and one of the best darn places in town to get a hair cut (we love Trixie’s!). Its bold simple geometric pattern on the front door might clue you in to the fact that this is not going to be the home to stuffy waiting rooms and cold sterile floors.

And man, would you be right.

Sacred Health, situated at the corner of 42nd Street and University Avenue in the Uptown Shopping Center, smack dab in the middle of Des Moines, Iowa is home to an entire menu of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum experts. A community growing with as much care and love as the babies they are honored to help welcome. We wanted to introduce you to the amazing faces you might see if you come into the space and the kinds of services they offer.

Midwife

Your first stop would most likely be with the Midwife at Woman Rising Midwifery. Rebecca Schleuger-Valadao, ARNP CNM (that’s a Nurse Practitioner, who is specifically trained to be a Certified Nurse Midwife). Rebecca is an independent provider, seeing families across the life span with a specific focus on reproductive health. She focuses on assisting those with female reproductive systems through pre-conception, fertility/infertility, conception, pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and postpartum recovery. You can also then see Rebecca with your newborn through 6 weeks of age, after which they can transition to another provider. She assists people in the out of hospital setting, delivering with a Registered Nurse and all the medical and safety equipment needed in her client’s home. If the situation arises where a hospital is needed, she retains her position and good relationship with Broadlawns Medical Center on an as-needed basis.

Chiropractic + Acupuncture

Down the hall, you will find other supportive Providers, such as Chiropractors Dr. Jennifer Thompson of Balance Chiropractic and Wellness, and Dr. Kimberly Schmidt Mackey of Sage Chiropractic and Acupuncture. Both specialize in Pregnancy and Postpartum and Newborns. While Dr. Kim is also an Acupuncturist and has a very dedicated interest in preconception (aka getting your body ready for pregnancy), Dr. Jen has an established practice in Ankeny and also serves people across the lifespan at that location.

Massage Therapist + Doulas

Right across the hall from them is Shannissy Catron of Budding Roses. Shannissy is a Licensed Massage Therapist, with a particular focus on Prenatal Massage. Shannissy is also one of several doulas that we have good relationships. Other doulas closely affiliated with the space include:

Yoga

If you keep wandering down the hall, you will run into the office of Pam Steinick, C-IAYT of Atha Soma Yoga. That fancy abbreviation stands for Certified with the International Association of Yoga Therapists, and she is one of the two practicing in the State of Iowa. What Pam offers is both group and private sessions that focus on finding dysfunctional body patterns, established by either traumatic events or chronic illness conditioning, and developing a yoga practice to release tension, and contracted muscles. While she works with those across the lifespan, she does work specifically with people experiencing pelvic floor issues following delivery.

As if that was not enough, Sacred Health is also the home base for Prenatal Yoga Instructor Elissa Cirignotta of Happy Mindful People, teaching a 6 week rotating Prenatal Yoga class for those in their second trimester. As a yoga instructor for over 10 years, Elissa has extensive experience in instructing people of all different ages and abilities.

Lactation Support

In addition, we are developing our Lactation support services with our chest feeding superstars; Tera Hamann BSN IBCLC, Jenny Wood IBCLC, and Jewelz Smith CLS. An IBCLC is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with a minimum of 1000 hours of clinical experience. Between these three providers, they have helped hundreds of people develop healthy breastfeeding relationships through support groups, hands-on assistance, in-person and virtual classes, private appointments, and community education.

Birth Trauma Resolution Therapist

And finally, for those that have had previous trauma or loss, Sabbath Schrader, RN (the owner of Sacred Health and Registered Nurse that attends birth with Rebecca from Woman Rising Midwifery) assists women as a Birth Trauma Resolution Therapist, processing emotions and experiences surrounding difficult birth journey’s, stillbirth, reproductive concerns, infertility, miscarriage, and sexual assault and abuse.

Who We Are

If Sacred Health shared some common themes, it would be trauma focus, evidence based care, holistic awareness, and a passion for the reproductive rights of all people. We believe in bodily autonomy, science, intuition, and the right to make choices about yourself and your children. Inclusive care, and fighting to improve the very real threat to women in marginalized populations, is part of who we are. As we like to say at Sacred Health – We are ALL designed for Wellness. And we should all have access to it.

We hope in the future to continue growing and expanding our services, classes, workshops, providers, and community outreach. But for now, we remain diligent with our hope that you will find a community here if you are seeking it, compassion here if you need it, and home here if you want it. Please download our PDF of available services and providers, along with their contact information and other class handouts.
