National Night Out in Des Moines

National Night Out happens every year on the first Tuesday in August. This annual event is a time when communities come together with the police-community to create partnerships, children can learn, and much more. Mark your calendars for August 7 this year.

National Night Out, Des Moines, Iowa

Altoona 

Tuesday, August 7; 6 to 8 p.m. 

Altoona Christian Church 

National Night Out is a fun, free community-building campaign established in 1984. It is held every year in thousands of communities in all fifty states, US Territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August. Altoona first celebrated National Night Out in 2016. Don’t miss out!

They do this to foster community partnerships, neighborhood friendships, celebrate first responders, and enjoy free family and community fun!

Beaverdale 

Tuesday, August 7; 6 to 8 p.m. 

The BNA will again partner with Des Moines Police and City of Des Moines Fire Department, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and local businesses to sponsor National Night Out. This is a free, kid-friendly event, held at Beaver Bend (the intersection of Beaver and Franklin Avenues and 41 st St).

Chamberlain Park 

Tuesday, August 7; 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. 

2150 Woodland Avenue, Des Moines 

The Woodland Heights Neighborhood Organization will once again host a National Night Out event at Chamberlain Park, located on Woodland Avenue, one block west of M. L. King Parkway. This nationwide annual event is a great social evening that strengthens neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships. The event normally starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m. This is a FREE Event and is Family Friendly. Food and Drinks are provided.

FREE PARKING: Freedom Financial Bank @ Woodland & MLK (parking lot entrance on Woodland) is generously inviting NNO attendees to park in the bank’s parking lot after 5 pm.

Dallas Center 

Tuesday, August 7; 5 to 7 p.m. 

Dallas Center Fire Department 

Join DCFD for National Night out. We will be giving out Hot Dogs at the FD as well as have the trucks on display. Chat with our members and ask questions should you have them.

Drake

Tuesday, August 7; 5 to 8 p.m. 

Turn on your porch lights, bring the kids, and join your neighbors at Drake Park for National Night Out. At this annual community-building event, you’ll get to meet neighborhood leaders and public safety officers, not to mention enjoy games, music, fun, and food with your neighbors. We’ll be grilling up burgers and serving lemonade.

It’s all free, brought to you by the Drake Neighborhood Association and sponsors including Sonic Factory Studios, CopyCat Prints, and Bank Iowa.

Gray’s Lake Neighborhood

Tuesday, August 7; 6 to 8 p.m. 

Join the Gray’s Lake Neighborhood in the new shelter at MacRae Park for food, brats, hot dogs, beverages, snow cones! Kid’s activities include spin art, giant Jenga, Twister & more.

Highland Park Neighborhood

Tuesday, August 7; 6 to 9 p.m.

Indianola Hills Neighborhood

Tuesday, August 7; 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Join your neighbors of Indianola Hills and the Des Moines Police Department for a picnic on National Night Out, Tuesday, August 7. Located at Columbus Park in Des Moines.

Bring a dish to share and enjoy food from area restaurants. Any and all are welcome to join!

Merle Hay Neighborhood 

Tuesday, August 7; 6 to 8 p.m. 

Northwest Community Center 

Please join the Merle Hay Neighborhood Association for our annual observance of National Night Out, America’s night out against crime, from 6 p.m. to 8 on Tuesday, August 7 at the Northwest Community Center, 5110 Franklin Ave. There will be food, a
bounce house, games for kids, family-friendly entertainment, door prizes, and great tips and information from public safety personnel about how to safeguard your property against crime. Tableware, food, and drinks will be provided.

Oakridge Neighborhood

Tuesday, August 7; 5 to 7 p.m. 

Play City Area at Oakridge

Come to celebrate National Night Out. All are welcome but kids under three must be with an adult for safety reasons. Carnival games and food as well as a dunk tank, rock climbing wall, jump roping, corn hole game, petting zoo and photo booth — lots to do for everyone.

Urbandale

Tuesday, August 7; 5 to 7:30 p.m. 

Urbandale Police Department

Mark your calendars for the 2018 Urbandale Police Department National Night Out Event. In 2017, our event received the 8th place and received a National Award for our National Night Out Event. This is a great opportunity to bring the whole family out for some fun, games, and food while interacting with our local Officers in Urbandale. Help us to show the criminals that they will not be tolerated in Urbandale. This is also our 10 Year Anniversary of hosting this great event and we are hoping to make it our biggest event so far.

Watrous Heights + Magnolia Park Neighborhoods

Tuesday, August 7; 6 to 8 p.m. 

Join for a night of fun for the whole family! Magnolia Park Neighborhood Association in collaboration with Watrous Heights Neighborhood Association will be hosting National Night out at South Union Elementary School, on the west side pavilion. There will be great food, free school supplies while they last, a dance performance at 7:00 pm by Kranto Dance & Fitness, face painting and a soccer match on the lawn. Everyone in our community is invited – it is a fantastic opportunity to get to know your neighbors!

Waukee Public Safety Day 

Tuesday, August 7; 5 to 8 p.m. 

Waukee Police Department 

The Waukee Police and Fire Departments will host their annual Public Safety Day! The event aims to educate citizens about various safety measures and to create a neighborly environment in which the public can interact with police officers and firefighters.

Waukee Public Safety Day will feature an array of activities and demonstrations including:
• Interactive fire hose demonstrations
• Rock-climbing wall
• The Kids Firefighter Obstacle Course
• Child ID station
• Dunk tank
• Fatal Vision Goggles
• Seatbelt rollover demonstration
• Tours of the Waukee Public Safety Building and Police and Fire vehicles

Free food from Fareway and beverages from Atlantic Bottling will be served.

Waveland Park 

Tuesday, August 7; 6 to 8:30 p.m. 

4211 Chamberlain Avenue, Des Moines 

The WPNA will be hosting a neighborhood event for NNO in partnership with City of Des Moines Police & Fire, Roosevelt Cultural District, and local businesses. This is a free, kid-friendly event to be held at the Shops at Roosevelt. This year’s event will feature fire trucks, police patrols, a bounce house, kids’ activities, and snow cones & ice cream for purchase from Tropical Sno and Outside the Scoop.

Please plan to join us for a fun evening with your neighbors to help promote safety in the City of Des Moines! Statistics show that neighborhoods which host multiple public events are less likely to experience violent crimes; so, your participation is an important way to keep Waveland Park safe! Bring your kids and enjoy an evening of fun and entertainment.

Windsor Heights 

Tuesday, August 7; 5 to 7 p.m. 

Colby Park 

There’s something for every member of the family to enjoy. They will kick the festivities off at 5 p.m. at Colby Park. Enjoy Music and the Park and rescheduled Fourth of July fireworks also!
