Molly’s Cupcakes: Build Your Own Cupcake in Des Moines

Cupcakes and cupcake shops have seem to be the new trend in Des Moines. When attending a FemCity Coffee & Connection last week, I had the chance to visit Molly’s Cupcakes. I was extremely impressed and learned so much about cute small cupcake shop located in Downtown Des Moines.

Molly’s Cupcakes is no ordinary cupcake shop. They have three awards to show for their delicious cupcakes including the winner of Cupcake Wars on the Food Channel, winner of USA Today’s One of 10 Best Cupcake Bakeries in the Country and the winner of Best Cupcakes from VOICE.

They are best known for their tasty filled cupcakes and the build-your-own option.

I am in love of all the cute, school room decor. It included fun swings to sit at the counter, a chalkboard with the story of Molly, lockers, lunchboxes, and school desks and chairs. So fitting considering the story behind Molly’s Cupcakes.

Yes, their tasty and unique creations are amazing, but the story behind Molly’s Cupcakes is sweet and inspiring. Johnny, founder and chief egg cracker of the company, had a third grade teacher named Molly. When anyone in his class celebrated a birthday Molly would bake delicious cupcakes using her own special recipe for the class. Molly and Molly’s cupcakes impacted Johnny’s life’s greatly. He decided to open a cupcake shop in memory of her. In honor of Molly, a portion of the profits of cupcakes sold go to schools within the community. How wonderful is that?!

Molly’s Cupcakes has several locations across the country including Chicago, New York, Iowa City and Des Moines. I had a chance to listen to Courtney Callahan, co-owner, talk about the story about Molly’s Cupcakes, being a female entrepreneur in Des Moines, and of course cupcakes! 🙂

Molly’s Cupcakes is located at 215 E. 3rd Street in the East Village.
