The year 2020 has brought on many hurdles, including staying active. Our children and ourselves may have spent hours and hours in front of screens.
Des Moines Parent and the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative are thrilled to be partnering to encourage Iowa families to live a healthier lifestyle!
October is Healthiest State Month! To celebrate all month long, we’ve created a fun challenge you can do to practice your 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! habits.
Simply complete the Healthiest State Month Trail Map challenge and earn a 5-2-1-0 drawstring backpack for all of your future adventures.

Here’s how you can participate:

- Complete each healthy habit listed on the map
- Snap a photo of your completed map
- Fill out the form at IowaHealthiestState.com/Prize
- Share your adventures on social media using #HealthyChoicesCount

Unplug! Plan a screen-free day: Head to Living History Farms, take a tour of the Iowa State Capitol, National Mississippi River Museum, or visit another fun museum in your area. Still need ideas? Check out this list of 50+ fun and cheap screen-free activities.
Try a new-to-you fruit or veggie: Head to your local farmer’s market and see if you can find a new fruit or veggie to try! If you shop at the grocery store, look for these fruit and veggie swaps for your old favorites.
Register for the Healthiest State 10th Annual Walk: Grab the kids and walk for 30 minutes on October 7. There are so many reasons why walking is good for our health. Take a step in the right direction by registering your household for a walk here. It’s free and easy!
Read a book: Check out some books from your local library and check out these 7 bookish resources for families to engage with this fall.
Visit a state, county, or city park: Fall is here! Do not miss this opportunity to walk and see some of the best fall foliage around, check out this interactive park map and find a park near you to walk!
Track how much water you drink in a day: Do you know how much water you should drink in a day? (Hint: You should drink the same amount of glasses of water as how old you are, up to 8!) Track your daily water consumption with this handy worksheet.
Make a healthy recipe: If you’re looking for easy and affordable healthy recipes – look no further! Pick a recipe with lots of fruits and veggies to help you get your five servings each day.

5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count! Virtual Summit
Join the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative for a virtual summit on October 15. This virtual event will have experts from all over the state who are working to support healthy environments in schools, at home, and more. See a full agenda and register here. The cost to attend is $20. Des Moines Parent will be an exhibitor at this wonderful educational experience!
Healthiest State Month Celebration Toolkits
Interested in participating in the Healthiest State Month? The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative has made it super easy for everyone. They have created Celebration Toolkits that contain ideas and suggestions on how to participate each week. Love social media? It also includes some fun social media posts and graphics you can use to spread the 5-2-1-0 message.
