Girls’ Brava Group!

Girls’ Brava Group!

Written by Ali Coppola

With the first day of school just around the corner, it’s time to start deciding what after-school activities your child will participate in this year. If you’re looking for something new and different for your school-aged daughter, check out Girls’ Brava Group. Brava is a non-competitive performance group that focuses on building girls’ self-confidence through singing, dancing and acting.

Girls’ Brava Group was created in 2012 by local elementary school counselor and mom, Ali Coppola. Ali had noticed a need for an after-school activity for girls that was completely non-competitive, helped girls feel good about themselves, promoted friendship, and truly focused on having fun. Many girls Ali knew – including her own daughter – loved to sing into their hairbrushes and put on shows for their families. With all of that in mind, the idea of Brava was born. After seven successful seasons of Brava and seven fun and upbeat performances, enrollment is open for this year’s group of Brava girls.

During each weekly session, the Brava girls start by playing games that focus on self-esteem, teamwork and friendship. The remainder of the class time is spent practicing solos in several positive and upbeat songs, learning choreography and dance moves to the songs, rehearsing and memorizing lines to the original play, and learning the skills of being on stage. Every girl is given the opportunity to have a solo and every girl will be on stage during the show. All girls in grades 3 and above have numerous speaking parts with no lead role in the performance. The girls will feel like stars during their final performance at the end of the Brava season.

Girls’ Brava Group meets on Thursday afternoons at St. Mark Lutheran Church in West Des Moines from October 1st through April 28th.

  • Girls in preschool through 2nd grade meet from 4:15 to 5:00
  • Girls in 3rd through 6th grade meet from 5:10 – 6:00. T

The cost is $40 per month with discounts for families enrolling more than one girl.
