It’s that time of year! Fireworks, music, carnivals, and more. The Nation’s birthday is just around the corner and there are several activities and celebrations going on in Central Iowa, to celebrate! Check out the list below. If I am missing something let me know!

Fourth of July


1. Prairie Meadows

Date: July 3rd at dusk, following live racing

2. Adventureland 

Date: July 4th

Fireworks will be shot off at about 9:30 p.m. for park guests


1. Ames Fourth of July Parade

Date: July 4th

Location: Downtown Ames. Check map here!

Bill Riley Talent Competition 9 am – 11 am

2. Independence Day Fireworks

Date: July 3rd at 10 pm

Location: Reiman Gardens

Date: Sunday, July 10th at dusk

They will be shot off at Prairie Ridge park

Fireworks will be shot off on the final day of Ankeny Summerfest!


Date: July 23rd at 9:45 pm

They will be shot off after the Clive Festival 


1. Yankee Doodle Pops

Date: Friday, July 1st 8:30 pm;

Location: West Terrace of the State Capitol

Concert prelude starts at 6:30 pm

The evening ends with the Des Moines Symphony’s 23rd annual firework display

2. Iowa Cubs Game

Date: July 4th , August 5th, August 26th & September 2nd

The fireworks will begin immediately after the 7:08 pm game

3. Good Guys Heartland Nationals

Date: July 1st – 3rd, Fireworks on Saturday evening

Location: Iowa State Fairgrounds

4. Military Day 

Date: July 4th

All Des Moines pools will be offering FREE admission for military members. Family member will receive half price admission.


1. Home Base Iowa Fireworks Show

Date: July 4th

Fireworks will be shot off at about 10 pm at the Grimes Sports Complex


1. National Balloon Classic

Date: July 30th & August 6th

Fireworks will be shot off after the evening balloon flight.


1. Urbandale 4th of July Celebration

Date: July 2nd – July 4th

Fireworks on July 4th at 10 pm

Location: Walker Johnston Park (fireworks are shot from)

Do NOT miss the Annual Urbandale Celebration which includes a parade, carnival rides, yummy food, music and a firework display! Carnival rides are located at Lions Park in Urbandale.

2. Independence Day at Living History Farms

Date: July 4th; Games begin at 11 am

Living History Farms will be hosting tons of games for the entire family! Do not miss the 1875-rules baseball game! Check out the entire details here!


Date: July 4th; Fireworks at dusk

Location: Centennial Park

Lots of fun and activities scheduled, including a parade at 3 pm that goes through Historic Downtown and ends at Centennial Park, where there will be inflatables, food, and live music!


1. Jordan Creek Towncenter; Live at the Creek Concert Series

Date: July 3rd; 5 pm – 10 pm

The fireworks will be shot off after the “Live at the Creek” Summer concert series.

2. Raccoon River Park

Date: July 4th at 8:45 pm

Starting at dusk, enjoy the annual fireworks extravaganza over Blue Heron Lake in Raccoon River Park. The fireworks are coordinated by the WDM Fire Department.

3. Valley Junction – All Iowa Bash 

Date: July 3rd 12 pm – 11 pm

Celebrate America! Join us for a revamped celebration of the United States and all things IOWA!! Try food and drink from local Iowa vendors, crafts from Iowa makers, music from Iowa bands, and more!

This evening will feature live music, food and fun for the entire family. The celebration will be held in Railroad Park and the 100 block of 5th Street after the completion of the West Des Moines Independence Day Parade .

4. Independence Day Parade

Date: July 3rd at 6:30 pm

Location: Starts at Valley High School and ends in Valley Junction. Then, enjoy the All Iowa Bash!

5. Aquatic Center Special! 

Date: July 4th

Admission into Valley View Aquatic Center or Holiday Pool for $3.00 per person from noon to 6 p.m.


Date: July 4th 2:30 pm – 10:30 pm; Fireworks 10 pm

Location: Colby Park

Windsor Heights holds a huge celebration each year! This year it will begin at 1 pm at Colby Park and will include face painting, inflatables, bingo, live music, and more! There will be food and a beer garden 2:30 pm – 9:30 pm. For complete details check here!
