Finding the Right Activity for Your Child

I never knew my daughter was part monkey until I watched her at gymnastics class at the Little Gym the other day. She was tumbling, swinging and hanging from bars all with a giant toothless smile on her face. To me that was the best part. Because we all want our kids to have fun and be happy, right? It seems like I see it all too often, parents forcing their kids to do an extra curricular activity that they don’t have any interest in. Watching an activity you can pick up on the kids that don’t want to be there. I think gymnastics is one of those activities that either your kid will love or just have no interest in. I saw that first hand with my 2 kiddos.

We started my son off at the Little Gym when he was 2 years old and then he took another class with his older sister when he was 3. My son, while having some fun at times, just didn’t want to do gymnastics. He didn’t really participate and after a few classes didn’t even want to go in the classroom anymore. My daughter on the other hand was just the opposite. She loved the gymnastics class right from the beginning. It fit her active play style and she thrived. So we had a choice. Do we keep my son in classes forcing him to do something he doesn’t really have his heart in? No way! The great part was how easy it was to cancel the class for him. No sales pitch, no pressure, I just called and let them know he wasn’t going to do the class anymore and the staff at the Little Gym took care of it. My daughter still continues to go and is having fun.

So I ask you this question today. Are you forcing your kids to do an activity they really don’t want to do? Do you see them smiling, laughing and having fun while they are doing it? If not, maybe it’s time to find something that’s more suited for your child’s style. It’s not about you. Don’t try and live your dream thru your child and don’t put them in activities just so you can socialize with the other parents. Take time and find something that fits your child. Because every child is different and there are a ton of activities out there to choose from in Central Iowa.
