How to Fight the Flu … Naturally

It’s officially that magical time of year when the air becomes brisk and the ground becomes speckled with white snowflakes. With the change in season comes the returning dreadful cold and flu “season”. Have you ever wondered why there is such a thing as a seasonal illness? Is it possible that viruses and bacteria only exist in the winter months? They don’t – this is a MYTH! 

What does happen during the winter months is our environment changes in a big way? We find ourselves and our families stuck inside with limited fresh air, which leads to decreased exercise. We overdose on sugar for weeks surrounding Halloween, then comes the stress and overeating of processed foods during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. This tornado of non-ideal environments = THE FLU. 

Our body’s immune system plays a critical role in fighting invaders such as viruses and bacteria. The stronger your immune system is, the stronger your defense mechanism against these invaders will be. I am sure you are thinking this all sounds great, but how is it that we can strengthen this system? 

Here are some practical steps us Midwesterns can take to make sure our bodies are functioning at their best during these suppressed months:

Get Outside

Getting outside and getting some fresh air can do wonders for your body, especially on days, the sun is shining. When your skin is exposed to sunlight it creates Vitamin D within your body. Vitamin D is important for normal growth and development of bones and teeth, as well as improved resistance against foreign invaders. 

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

Nothing will strengthen your immune system better than a diet that looks like a rainbow. Red meat, beets, apples, strawberries, oranges, bananas, lemons, free-range chicken, cucumber, broccoli, spinach, blueberries, pomegranate, and much much more. The more you cook from scratch and avoid processed foods the healthier your body will be.


Exercise can improve your health and overall quality of life. During the cold months, it becomes harder to stay consistent with workout routines due to the colder weather and shorter days. One thing you can do to help stay motivated is to set exercise goals. Goal setting is an important part of success in any venture and can help you direct your energies toward a final outcome. This will help you to maintain accountability during these gloomy days.

Drink Lots of Water

Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body, including your heart, brain, and muscles. Fluids carry nutrients to your cells and flush bacteria from your system. Due to the colder weather, we tend to feel less thirsty during the winter months, so be sure to keep your favorite water bottle handy to remind you to drink up!

Get Adjusted by a Chiropractor

There is no greater influencer on your immune system than your nervous system. Your nervous system controls and coordinates all functions within the body, including your immune system. Chiropractic was first linked to improved immunity during the epidemic of 1918. Since then studies have shown that specific chiropractic adjustments can increase disease-fighting white blood cells within the body (in some cases increases have been seen within 15 minutes!) which results in increased immunity. By restoring proper communication within the body, regular chiropractic care can be used as a great boost for natural immunity within the body.
