Fall Classes at Johnston Community Education

Fall Classes at Johnston Community Education

Are your kids itching for new ways to fill their afternoons and evenings? Maybe the better question is, are you ready for your kids to get involved and learn a new skill, join a sport, or discover a fun hobby? Don’t worry, we can help!

At Johnston Community Education, we understand the struggles that parents are facing to provide fun and enriching activities for their kids while still keeping them safe. With all that is going on in our world right now, it is natural for families to have different levels of comfort with gathering in groups, participating in fall sports, or joining in after school activities. Despite these differences, we want to provide class options that meet everyone’s needs. We’ve changed the structure of our classes this fall and have both Live Online (from home) and In-Person (at JCSD building) options for youth and adults. We even have a handful of parent-child classes to do together!

Adding Live Online classes that are held virtually through Zoom isn’t the only change we’ve made. Johnston Community Ed has established Health & Safety Guidelines based on guidance from the Iowa Department of Education and the Johnston Community School District’s approved Return to Learn plan. These guidelines represent the health and safety measures we are taking to create a culture of safety and to prevent the entry of communicable disease. Whenever groups of people gather together, in school or in the community, there is risk of spreading communicable disease.

Who is Johnston Community Ed?

Johnston Community Education is a partnership between the Johnston Community School District and the City of Johnston. We offer after school classes for elementary through high school-aged students—ranging from ACT Prep SEminars to Fun with Chocolate to Youth Basketball and more. We also provide fun classes for adults to discover a new hobby, focus on fitness, or to have a one-on-one date with their child.

Our main goal is to provide educational, recreational, and enrichment opportunities for the community of Johnston, however, *anyone* is welcome to attend our classes and camps. In an effort to keep everyone safe, only Live Online, weekend, and evening classes will be available to non-Johnston students while the Johnston Community School District is utilizing a 50/50 hybrid learning model. This will allow time for non-participating students to be out of the buildings and the facilities to be cleaned before classes begin.
