Everybody can be a SUPERHERO – The Beaverdale Superhero 5k

Everybody can be a SUPERHERO – The Beaverdale Superhero 5k

First it started with a vision: First Federated Church wanted to be a blessing to their surrounding community. Then came a need: Beaverdale did not have a major community event that was traditional in the month of May. We had longed to partner with the Beaverdale community to create a 5K race and before long, the Beaverdale Superhero 5K race was born.

We hope the run will take off like the other fun themed runs (The Color Run, The Red Flannel Run, The Glow Run, etc…) We also hope the race will help promote the Beaverdale community and it’s businesses. This is why we are running the parade route up Beaver Avenue. And we hope the race will continue to promote physical health within our families. The race has been set up to be very family friendly.

With a super hero theme, we wanted our charity to involve children! Who else would heroes have a heart to help out? We’ve chosen Everybody Wins of Iowa – a reading comprehension, mentoring program through the schools to support. A portion of every registration will be given to this charity.

The race director, Mike Howland (AKA Howie) is an avid runner. He is trying to run a marathon in all 50 states and has completed 14 so far. He is also a big comic book fan. Marrying the two loves with a super hero themed race has become the biggest thrill for him. His wife and twins will be running the race.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY:

The Iowa League of Heroes has committed to come and they are bringing The Dark Knight, himself, BATMAN! They are also bringing Wonder Woman! The Green Lantern and Optimus Prime will also be in attendance and all four heroes are available to meet and greet, take pictures, autographs, etc… Kids will also have the opportunity to enjoy free face painting and a bounce house. There will be free food and refreshments available and massage for after the race for our runners!

To make the comic book theme even more perfect, it’s nationally FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Comic book stores across the country give away free comic books and WE will give away free comic books ourselves. (We will also encourage you to head to your local comic book store AFTER the race to enjoy more freebies!) Participants can also expect to receive coupons from local Beaverdale businesses in their swag/goodie bag at packet pick up. (4-7pm at Fleet Feet in the East Village) Also, in the bag will be a Superman themed 5K or 1K Dri-FIT shirt for every race participant and much more! Medals will be given to various age brackets for males and females.
