Earth Day in Des Moines 2024

There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day in Des Moines in the month of April. You can do something as simple as grabbing trash bags and adventuring on a walk in your neighborhood or local park to pick up trash or plant a tree. There are also some great opportunities to help support the community you live in too! Earth Day + Extraordinary Eggs

Saturday, April 20

8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Water Works Park

On Saturday, April 20, 2024, starting at 8 a.m., there will be hundreds of beautiful, handmade extraordinary glass eggs waiting to be found in Water Works Park. This egg hunt is your invitation to explore one of America’s largest urban parks.Β In addition, visitors to the park can also use a special bingo card to identify our feathered friends found throughout the park; find special animal signs and tree hearts located throughout the park; follow the water treatment signs to learn more about how water is cleaned Des Moines Water Works; and enjoy food from one of the day’s vendors.

Earth Day Family 5k Run/Walk

Saturday, April 20

10 a.m. to Noon

Polk City, Iowa

Join Polk City Friends of the Parks for the third annual Earth Day Family 5K Run/Walk! Join them on Earth Day in enhancing, growing, and supporting the Polk City parks, trails, and green spaces. Participate in a fun run, and kids’ activities on the square. π‘πžπ π’π¬π­πžπ«πžπ πŸ“π€ 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐒𝐜𝐒𝐩𝐚n𝐭𝐬 will receive a native flowering plant, slap koozie & a raffle ticket for prizes. Earth Day at the Arboretum

The Brenton Arboretum

Join a fantastic lineup of local businesses for an open house-style event from 12:00-3:00 pm at The Brenton Arboretum. They will welcome hands-on activities, a selfie station, Des Moines Parent, Hot off the Presses food truck, artist Jill Woodward, Bee Expert Julie McGuire, and many more.

Free Admission – Greater Botanical Garden

The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Enjoy free admission to the Botanical Garden on Saturday, April 20 to participate in family-friendly activities, and engage with community partners. Full details have not been released yet. Check back here for more details.

Earth Day Family Fun

Raccoon River Park

Raccoon River Park hosts Earth Day Family Fun this year, offering free outdoor activities focused on environmental education and entertainment. Stop by community vendor tables, take home giveaways, create art and games from recyclable materials, go fishing, and meet live animals. You can also register for bonus educational sessions with limited space available.

Earth Day Trash Bash

Thursday, April 26

1 to 3 p.m.

Clive, Iowa

This community clean-up event is held throughout Clive and focuses on making Clive parks and trail areas β€œDistinct By Nature.” They ask that each volunteer register themselves due to a waiver that is included and required at the end of the online registation process, and to get an accurate count of volunteers. An informational email will be sent to each volunteer with more specific logistical information one week before the Trash Bash.
