Earth Day in Des Moines

There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day in Des Moines this year. Check out the list below for some fun ideas. A couple events require pre-registration. Make sure to register. If I am missing your Earth Day event, let me know. Make sure to follow our event calendar.

Wednesday, April 18 

4 to 5 p.m. 

Grimes Public Library 

Help us celebrate spring the right way! Join us as we make our very own tasty terrariums and birds nest. All materials will be edible!


Des Moines Parks and Recreation 

Friday, April 20 (rain date April 23) 

12 to 5 p.m. 

This small events has quickly grown over the years. It began with a few individuals and has quickly grown into a collaborative project between several cities and individuals. The event will kick-off at noon for food, music and educational booths. Afterwards, team captains will lead the volunteers to the different project locations across Des Moines to pick up trash.

The Metro Area is divided into volunteer project locations. Due to the size of this volunteer project, you must register with a team. Deadline for Captains to register is March 30. 


Urbandale Parks and Recreation 

Saturday, April 21 

9 a.m. to 11 p.m. 

Join the Urbandale Park and Rec for Earth Day and help clean up the Parks! Bring all those old plastic grocery bags you’ve been saving and we’ll compete against other metro communities for the most grocery bags collected! We’ve got three sites to chose from this year! Register to volunteer at for one of the three sites by April 10th (with a team or individually), so they know how many people to expect at each site. Please bring a pair of gloves if you have them. Please be sure to fill out the online waiver form prior to volunteering


Saturday, April 21

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

Celebrate the sixth annual Downtown Earth Day Tour with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, Iowa Rivers Revival and the Science Center of Iowa. Enjoy a short walk or bike ride between these three locations and spend the day learning about environmentally friendly practices. Drop-in activities and demonstrations focusing on sustainability and environmental awareness from various community organizations will be offered at each location. Also participate in a selfie contest to try and win family memberships at the Botanical Garden and Science Center!

Free admission all day at the Botanical Garden is sponsored by Principal. The Botanical Garden is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; activities run 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Science Center of Iowa is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with $5 admission


Located near the West Des Moines Library/Pond area 

Saturday, April 21

10 a.m. to Noon 

Earth Day is a perfect day for you and your family to come enjoy some family friendly outdoor activities. You could go kayaking, canoeing, fishing or you may choose to create a small paddle boat or relax in our outdoor lounge and enjoy a cup of coffee or cocoa! Free tree saplings will be handed out to celebrate this Earth Day Event. Come help us celebrate Earth Day today! This event will be cancelled during in-climate weather. For more details visit

 4 to 5:30 p.m. 

Michael Store; West Des Moines

Book your child into this fun and unique 1-hour fine art finger painting workshop where we create high quality fine art from finger paintings in support of children’s charities. This is a great way for children to make a mess and have fun while teaching them about the importance of helping others and giving back to their community.


Sunday, April 22

2 to 5 p.m. 

6th Avenue, Des Moines

Love your mother and join our Earth Day cleanup of 6th Avenue from Euclid to Aurora in Highland Park/Oak Park. Gloves, pick sticks, and trash bags will be provided.


Sunday, April 22 

1 to 2:30 p.m. 

Join Polk County Conservation on a biking and geocaching adventure! Meet at the Chichaqua Valley Trail be ready to bike a few miles as we search for geocaches hidden near the trail. FREE. No registration required. Download the free app “c:geo” or “Geocaching” on your smart phone before you arrive. We will also have GPS units available. Meet at the Trailhead on NE 88th St., south of Hwy 65.


Sunday, April 22

4 to 6 p.m. 

Heartland Soles 

Their first Green Run of the year will be on Earth Day starting at Heartland Soles in Johnston! Join them at 4 pm – no need to bring bags or gloves, they will be provided!
