Don’t Wait, Check the Date: Fire Prevention Week 2016

Every year in October, The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) holds Fire Prevention Week. During this week, communities all over America host different events, activities, and workshops to help celebrate!

Fire Prevention Week was established in 1925 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. This tragic event killed more then 250 people, left thousands homeless, destroyed over 17,400 structures, and burned more then 2,000 acres. The event began on October 8th, but most of the damage occurred on October 9th.

Each year Fire Prevention Week is observed from Sunday to Saturday, in which October 9th falls. This year it will be observed Sunday, October 9th until Saturday, October 15th.

Each year a theme is picked to help celebrate! This year’s theme is Don’t wait, check the date!
