Each summer Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA) offers young people throughout the Midwest the opportunity to explore their interest in performing arts. Five camp models will be offered this summer: Musical Theater Camp: Let’s Put On a Show! (six sessions), Musical Theater Dance Intensive with Wicked (one session), Acting and Improvisation Camp: Featuring Wicked (one session), Broadway Summer Intensive (one session), and Broadway Academy (one session).

 
MUSICAL THEATER CAMP: LET’S PUT ON A SHOW!
Grades 3–8 (based on Fall 2020 enrollment)
Six Sessions:                June 15 – 19, 2020
                                      June 22 – 26, 2020
                                      June 29 – July 3, 2020
                                      July 13 – 17, 2020
                                    July 20 – 24, 2020
                                    July 27 – 31, 2020
Camp Times: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
*Final performance on Friday at 5:30 p.m., followed by costume check-in
Act, sing, and dance as you put on an entire musical in one week!
This week-long day camp invites young artists to explore their talents and skills as musical theater actors in an original musical production. Each participant is guaranteed a role – assigned on the first day through an audition process – and will rehearse throughout the week. Additional workshops devoted to developing musical theater skills round out each day. No previous experience necessary; all experience levels are welcome.
 
MUSICAL THEATER DANCE INTENSIVE with Wicked
Grades 9-First Year of College (based on Fall 2020 enrollment)
One Session:                June 23-26, 2020
Camp Times:                Tuesday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
                                    Tuesday 6:45 p.m. – 10:20 p.m. (Wicked performance)
Company members from Wicked will lead teens in a four-day musical theater dance intensive. Through two daily masterclasses, participants will sharpen their dance technique within a range of musical theater styles, increase their characterization skills as movers, and gain knowledge of the industry from working professionals. Open to intermediate/advanced-level dancers in grades 9 through the first year of college.
Included in the tuition is one ticket to Tuesday, June 23, an evening performance of Wicked! All camp participants are encouraged to attend.
 
ACTING AND IMPROVISATION CAMP featuring Wicked
Grades 6-12 (based on Fall 2020 enrollment)
One Session: June 29 – July 3, 2020
Camp Times: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Tuesday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (day activities) and 6:45 p.m. – 10:15 p.m. (Wicked performance)
Friday, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
*Final showcase on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Strengthen your acting skills by exploring the connection between improvisation and acting. This week-long day camp will explore the problem-solving and quick-thinking skills that allow actors to work together in improvisation and how those skills can help actors create strong characters and stories. Camp participants will engage in both improvisation activities and acting sessions, as well as perform in a culminating showcase of their work at the end of camp.
Included in the tuition is one ticket to Tuesday, June 30, an evening performance of Wicked! All camp participants are encouraged to attend as a lead-in to exclusive interaction with company members of the show. Appropriate for both beginning and advanced acting level.
BROADWAY SUMMER INTENSIVE
Grades 9–First Year of College (based on Fall 2020 enrollment)
One Session:  July 13 – 18, 2020
Camp Times:    Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
*Final showcase on Saturday from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Guest Broadway performers lead teens in a week-long series of masterclasses on the “triple threat” skills of musical theater — acting, dancing, and singing. Participants sharpen their performance skills, gain knowledge about the auditioning and casting process, and learn about the Broadway industry from working professionals. The week culminates in a showcase for family and friends. Auditions are not required, although previous theater training or experience is necessary.
BROADWAY SUMMER ACADEMY
Grades 6-8 (based on Fall 2020 enrollment)
One Session: July 20 – 24, 2020
Camp Times:    Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
*Final showcase on Friday at 5:30 p.m. on the Civic Center main stage
Open to any middle school student grades 6-8 who dreams of performing in a musical, this week-long day camp brings experienced guest Broadway performers to lead sessions in the triple threat areas of musical theater – acting, dancing, and singing.
Throughout the week, participants also receive coaching in audition skills, appropriate song selection, and performing. Faculty will begin with each participant at his or her ability level and lead them through activities designed to stretch skills. No audition is necessary; previous music, dance, or acting experience is recommended. Previous participants are welcome.
