Des Moines Community Playhouse: Family Shows 2016-17

The Des Moines Community Playhouse has a great line up scheduled for Central Iowa families this season! This is a great way to introduce theatre to your young ones in a small and intimate setting. I also love to have date night at the Des Moines Community Playhouse, a great opportunity to get out and see a great show! All of these dates and times are included in our event calendar also.

West Side Story

October 7th – October 30th, 2016

7:30 PM Wednesday through Saturday; 2:00 PM Sunday

Romeo and Juliet takes to the streets of New York City, where two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, fight for supremacy. But when a former Jet, Tony falls in love with Maria, the sister of a Shark, the rivalry explodes with danger. With timeless music from Leonard Bernstein, West Side Story is one of the greatest love stories of all time!

The Boxcar Children

November 4th – November 20th, 2016

7:00 PM Friday; 1:00 PM & 4:00 PM Saturday-Sunday

Generations of readers have cherished the adventures of The Boxcar Children and now their stories come to life onstage! Follow orphan siblings Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny as they run away from foster care to make a home for themselves in an abandoned railroad boxcar. They eventually meet their grandfather, who supports and cares for them. Through the rewards and perils of life on the run in the Depression era, they hold true to their motto: “We stick together like glue.”

Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka

December 2nd – December 18th, 2016

7:00 PM Fridays; 1:00 PM & 5:00 PM Saturdays & Sundays

Join Charlie Bucket and four other Golden Ticket winners as they set off on a delicious adventure through Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory with Mr. Wonka himself! With excitement around every turn, Charlie learns the importance of sincerity, kindness and “pure imagination!” The musical combines elements of both Roald Dahl’s book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the 1971 Gene Wilder movie, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, with newly created material.

Ramona Quimby

January 6th – January 22nd, 2017

7:00 PM Friday; 1:00 PM & 4:00 PM Saturday-Sunday

Unpredictable. Exasperating. Boisterous and independent. That’s Ramona Quimby for you. Third grade is NOTHING like Ramona imagined. Her teacher hates her, her older sister Beezus is a pain, Aunt Bea is going to marry a dork, and her Dad just lost his job. But with the help of her friends, Ramona takes on life’s challenges and the audience laughs and cheers her on.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby

January 27th – February 12th, 2017

7:30 PM Wednesday through Saturday; 2:00 PM Sunday

What would you do for true love? Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, takes Long Island newcomer Nick Carraway under his wing and into his decadent world of obsession, greed, and danger. Gatsby hopes to reunite with Nick’s cousin, Daisy Buchanan.

February 24th – March 12th, 2017

7:00 PM Friday; 1:00 PM & 4:00 PM Saturday-Sunday

Based on the award-winning book by Louis Sachar, Holes tells the story of Stanley Yelnats, who continues his family’s curse of bad luck and finds himself at Camp Green Lake, convicted of a crime he didn’t commit. But this isn’t any ordinary camp; the boys are forced to dig day in and day out in search of historic treasure.

The New Mel Brooks Musical: Young Frankenstein

March 17th – April 19th, 2017

7:30 PM Wednesday through Saturday; 2:00 PM Sunday

From the creators of The Producers comes this wickedly inspired re-imagining of the classic Frankenstein story! Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein) finally succeeds in creating a monster to rival his grandfather’s, but not without some hilarious complications. With the help of his hunchbacked side-kick Igor (“It’s pronounced Eye-gore”), a leggy lab assistant, Inga, and fiancée Elizabeth, Frederick sets to work back in Transylvania to finish what his family started long ago.

Fancy Nancy

April 28th – May 21st, 2017

7:00 PM Friday; 1:00 PM & 4:00 PM Saturday-Sunday

Meet Nancy, who believes that more is ALWAYS better when it comes to being fancy. She loves her frilly bedroom, her lace-trimmed socks, and will take any chance she gets to show-off her fancy French! But when Nancy finds out that Wanda was picked to be the star mermaid of their first dance recital and Nancy is forced to play a tree, she must learn kindness and find the “fancy flair” in her new role.

Giving away 4 tickets to a Playhouse show is very generous! I’m glad there are still nice people in this crazy, screwy world. 🙂

Oh my gosh, Ramona! I would LOVE to take my 6 year old to see Ramona!! My husband and I went just as a weird/fun thing to do while I was pregnant with her and I remember thinking, “I hope someday I’m able to bring her to something like this.” She’d also love Fancy Nancy!
