Crown Cover: Protecting Your Kids From Skin Cancer – From a Stage 4 Melanoma Survivor

Did you know just one or two sunburns will double your child’s lifetime risk of melanoma? Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer. As a parent, protecting your child’s skin from the sun when they play outdoors may seem somewhat like a hassle, but it’s 100% worth it. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year than any other form of cancer. All parents should make sun protection a priority for their children and themselves.

Children have very delicate skin, and can easily burn. The younger you are, the more likely those sunburns can cause serious skin damage, and catch up with you later in life.

Take it from me, people of all races and skin types can and do get melanoma. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma at the age of 27. I couldn’t even begin to count how many sunburns I got as a child, and into my teen and early 20’s. Like many people, I never thought skin cancer would happen to me.  I was ok with getting burned and trying to get a “healthy tan”.

FACT: There is no such thing as a “healthy tan”! Ultraviolet light is known as a carcinogen, just like tobacco.

In an effort to help prevent skin cancer, promote skin cancer awareness, and support cancer research by giving back, Crown Cover sun protective clothing was formed in 2020. Knowing the challenges first-hand of sun protection, I wanted to offer more options for parents and children while donating portions of each purchase to cancer research. The only reason I am alive to tell my cancer story is because of a clinical trial study at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. My mission was to start a sun protective clothing brand with a positive and impactful goal to help other battling cancer. Crown Cover exists to support skin cancer awareness, skin cancer prevention, and supporting innovative cancer treatment options for all cancer warriors.

Knowing that children are the most vulnerable to sunburns and skin damage, Crown Cover offers wide brim children hats for all ages and sizes. Our hats have built-in UV protection and are rated UPF 50+, meaning the fabric protects against 98%+ of damaging UV rays. Experts recommend wearing sun-protective clothing in conjunction with sunscreen SPF 30 or higher, and reapplying at least every 2 hours to all areas not covered.  Let your kids pick out a hat they like as well (we recommend Crown Cover, of course 😉). The best sun protection for your children is whichever one they will use consistently.

It’s important to show your children that sun protection is important. If you’re not taking steps to protect your skin from the sun, neither will they. Apply sunscreen in front of them whenever possible, and always wear a hat outdoors in the sun.

We offer children hats in 3 different sizes, from newborns up to teenagers, as well as other adult hats. You can check out our full lineup at CrownCover.Life/Shop. Portions of every purchase are donated to cancer research at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
