May is National Bike Month. Summer is the perfect time to get out as a family and go on a bike ride. Central Iowa offers many family bike rides, adult rides, and tons of trails. There are also several bike shops in the area where you can visit to ask questions about biking safety, trails or to buy a new bike. Here are a few family rides and bike shops in our area.

Join your favorite comic book superheroes and local superheroes to learn about bicycle and bike helmet safety! You can be a superhero in your neighborhood by setting a good example for your friends, practicing safe bike riding, and always wearing your helmet.

Join in the festivities by bike riding with your children to the library. Come in, cool off and check out some books. For each day you and your family bike to the library, during the month of May, you will be entered to win a family prize basket. Only one ticket per family, per day.

Shade Tree Auto in Grimes
Free bicycle rodeo for kids and families hosted with Rasmussen Bike Shop. Drop-in any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for ongoing bike inspections, safety classes, and fun contests for prizes. Food will be provided and bring your helmet with your bikes!

Meet at Walker Johnston Park, Giovannetti Community Shelter
Join mayor Bob Andeweg for a bike ride on the Urbandale trails. Helmets required. Cancelled if rains. Register with City of Urbandale.
Every Monday evening beginning May 8th
6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Every Monday evening you can join other bikers and ride through neighborhoods of Des Moines. The first ride will start a Cowles Commons down to the East Village. Follow Des Moines City Ride Facebook page to stay up to date on rides and other information.
Friday, May 12th
Join Mayor Paula Dierenfeld for the Mayor’s Bike Ride, a fun ride on Johnston’s trails. The three-mile loop begins at the Johnston Hy-Vee, located at 5750 Merle Hay Road. The ride ends with a delicious lunch provided by Hy-Vee. Register with City of Johnston.

8:30 a.m. – 10 a.m.
Join Ankeny Mayor Gary Lorenz for Ankeny’s Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride as he leads the way for a morning trail ride through the community. Two routes have been chosen for the event: a 15-mile route to the Oasis located on the High Trestle Trail, great for the avid bicyclist; and a 3.5-mile family friendly route, also utilizing the High Trestle Trail and local community trail connections. No registration required.

$10 per rider
There are three different routes you can enjoy the city’s cycling amenities. You can enjoy a 4-mile route or a 10 or 24 mile on-street route which will take you through various terrains and parts of the city. The routes start and stop at City Hall. All registered participants will receive a FREE t-shirt. Day of event registration will begin at 8 a.m.
NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK WEEK

Bike to Work Day is May 19th
Communities nationwide participate in National Bike to Work Week and Bike to Work Day. This is a great way to support the Earth and your health by pedaling to work. Des Moines often holds special events and deals during this week. Keep an eye out!
May 17th & May 18th

Pleasant Hill Public Library
Learn bicycle safety skills while creating a project together. Children ages 2 years to 6 years old are encouraged to attend to learn safety skills and to navigate the do’s and don’ts of riding a bicycle. Helmets are required and parents are recommended to participate. Bring a sack lunch and eat at the available picnic tables.
Saturday, May 20th
Enjoy a spring bike ride on the Prairie Parkway Bike Trail. You will have a chance to see bison and elk, ride among native wildflowers, toss seed bombs and meet live animals. This is a FREE event with snacks, refreshments, games & activities provided. There will be two rides, 10 miles and a Family Fun Ride (1.5 miles).
INDIANOLA BIKE FEST

Fun, free, family-friendly. There will be a bike rodeo, giant tricycle races and other fun games.
CLIVE MAYOR’S BIKE RIDE

Join Mayor Clive Cirksena for a fun filled morning during the Clive Festival. Two rides will be offered (longer ride and shorter, family ride). Register through the Parks and Recreation, entry $10 per person. Meet at the Clive Aquatic Center.
