At-Home Activities for Families | Local + Online

Are you on the hunt for at-home activities? With everything that is happening in our world today, you may be spending a lot more time at home with your children. This may affect many of your favorite local businesses. There are a few businesses within our Des Moines community offering great options to help support you during this time. Not only are they supporting you, but you are returning the favor.

If you are not local to Des Moines and reading this, I challenge you to get creative. Reach out to your favorite local businesses and organizations to see if they will offer something you can do from home. A great way to support them during this stressful time, while having fun in your own home.

Not only are local businesses providing unique options, but there are also great options through the use of technology. Thankfully technology is amazing and allows so many wonderful opportunities to continue learning and exploring. Take a look at the list of at-home activities we have gathered below. Artfull

if you are local to Des Moines you may have heard of visited Artfull a playground full of fun art and DIY projects. Artfull has created an online shop where you can have the items delivered right to you.

Art Terrarium

Art Terrarium, a local Des Moines favorite, is offering DIY terrarium kits with pixie plants and succulents. Not in Des Moines? Reach out to your local favorite plant store and see if they will offer something similar!

Broadway Plays & Musicals

Watch 15 of your favorite Broadway plays & musicals in the comfort of your own home. Some favorites include Rent, Cats, Billy Elliott the Musical and more. What a great way to introduce your child to Broadway!

Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

Join the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden on their Facebook page for a Facebook Live at 3 p.m. each weekday. They will be hosting a Home Safari where they will highlight one of their animals and include and activity you can do from home.

Creme Cupcake

Indulge in some amazing treats as a family! Creme Cupcake is offering a cupcake decorating kit. Each kit has 12 cupcakes, frosting, and sprinkle cups. They will deliver to some locations or you can pick up your kit directly from the store. While you are there pick up some of their amazing cinnamon rolls for breakfast!

If you are not located in Des Moines, reach out to a local bakery near you. This is a great activity to do at home as a family while supporting a small business within your community.

Disney World Virtual Rides

Dreaming of a trip to Disney World or Disneyland? Hop on your computer and enjoy virtual rides of some of their famous rides including Space Mountain, It’s A Small World, Splash Mountain and more.

Field Trips

Just because you may be confined at home does not mean you cannot take a fun field trip! Here is a list of virtual field trips you and your family can take from home. Some locations include the San Diego Zoo, Yellowstone National Park, The Great Wall of China, and even Mars. Hop on Pinterest and find a fun craft to do to go along with the ‘trip’.

Five Monkeys Inc.

Five Monkey’s Inc. is a fun paint your own pottery studio located in Des Moines, Iowa. She is offering a to-go option! Take a look at all the pieces she has to offer and order online. You can then pick up your pieces, plus glaze to take home and paint. When you are finished return them to Five Monkeys Inc. for firing.

Not in Des Moines, Iowa? Reach out to a local paint your own pottery studio in your community and see if they will offer the same option. This is a great way to still get creative in your home AND support local.

Hogwarts Digital Escape Room

Have a Harry Potter fan in your household? Take this Hogwarts Digital Escape Room challenge! Do it by yourself or have fun as an entire family.

Imagineering in a Box

Are you a Disney fan and want to dream and create, check this out! Imagineering in a Box is a free online program that brings together the diverse talents of Disney Imagineers around the world for a one-of-a-kind learning experience.

The Knotty Nail

Get crafty with The Knotty Nail’s DIY kits. This is a great option to have some fun at home! These DIY kits can be picked up at the store or can be shipped directly to you. The Knotty Nail is located in Des Moines, Iowa. Another great way to support local businesses. If you are in a different community reach out to local shops and see if they will be willing to offer something similar.

Local Library

Your local library may have canceled programs and visiting the library at this time may not be recommended, but did you know they offer a ton of options online? For example, the Des Moines Public Library allows you to check out e-books, stream TV shows, and movies, learn a language, and more. Reach out to your local library and see what online resources they offer that you can take advantage of at home.

Lunch Doodles with Mo Willems

Join famous author Mo Willems for lunch and doodles on Facebook Live. Tune in at 1 p.m. Eastern on The John Fr. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Facebook page through March 27th for fun with Mo!

Museum Tours

Now, this is pretty cool! You can explore 12 museums from around the world from your home. Get your PJs on, grab some popcorn and take a tour of some of these amazing museums around the world.

NASA

Our family and children especially are in awe with our solar system. NASA has made their entire media library available to all and copyright free.

National Park Tours

Did you have plans to visit and explore a National Park in the next few weeks? Explore some of our amazing National Parks from home. This is a wonderful opportunity to daydream and create a list of which ones you want to physically visit in the future!

Netflix

Netflix is great to binge watch all your favorite shows but did you know they offer a ton of educational shows too?! Take a look at this giant list of 150+ educational shows you should add to your watch list.

Raddish Kids

Love cooking? Grab the kids and make dinner together! Raddish Kids offered 25,000 meal kits that were delivered straight to each family’s home. As of now, they are sold out. They have noted they are working hard to create more opportunities, so sign up to get notified when those come available. They also have listed their Swedish recipe cards. Take a look at the ingredients maybe you have some at home or order the rest via grocery delivery!

Scholastic

Scholastic is offering fun ways to learn at home. They have created special cross-curricular journeys and every day includes four separate learning experiences. They have broken it down by grade level. Let the kids do it themselves or do it as a family.

Storyline Online

Listen to a story read aloud by a famous actor! Each video includes an activity guide for children in grades kindergarten through 5th grade.

Tinkergarten

Our family loves Tinkergarten! Not only do they offer amazing outdoor, educational classes but their website is filled with activities you can do at home. They have their activities broken down by age, season, and skills. Get some fresh air and give a few of these a try!

XO-LP

XO-LP is one of my favorite local artists in Des Moines. She has been extremely generous and has created FREE printable coloring sheets for families to print at home and color. While you are on her site take a look at her adorable stationery and send your loved ones a sweet note.

Erin Huiatt

Erin is a reliable resource and stepping stone for women and families to find support and make connections within our community. She wants families to feel confident to reach out and ask for help and advice to get pointed in the right direction. She enjoys traveling and exploring with her two children in tow!
