As a parent, I think that it’s important to remember that you are a person with outside interests beyond your children. Here are some fun things going on this month in central Iowa that don’t necessarily include your kids!
Thursday, April 4 @ 7 pm – FREE Carly Rae Jepsen concert at The Point in Clive. I repeat myself – FREE. The catch? Only the first 250 people will get in. Call me maybe?
Friday, Saturday, Sunday April 4-6 – Just Between Friends Consignment Sale at Events Center West. Kids grow so fast that it’s hard to keep them in appropriately sized shoes and clothes. Here’s a great way to find some great deals on someone else’s gently used stuff. I’ll definitely be checking out this sale to see if I can find something for Lucan.
This year’s Des Moines Public Library AViD series has me excited as a book geek. They are featuring several well-known authors like Amy Tan. April 16 @ 7 pm – Cheryl Strayed will be at the Central Library as part of the AViD series at the Des Moines Public Library! Strayed wrote the book Wild, which was featured as part of Oprah’s new book club. I read this book last fall and was vaguely entertained by it. While her journey was definitely adventurous, there were often times I was silently admonishing her foolishness and downright irresponsible choices. Overall, her tale of bravery was fascinating albeit at times hard to relate. Regardless I think her lecture would prove to be interesting and something this book club gal would enjoy.
Another April 16th event is a lecture about the world of Downton Abbey given by Jessica Fellowes, author of The World of Downton Abbey and the follow-up, The Downton Chronicles. She is also niece to the creator of the Downtown Abbey television series, Julian Fellowes. This discussion also includes topics such as the changing role of women and the disintegration of class hierarchy in Britain post World War 1. This lecture is in Ames at Iowa State University’s Memorial Union in the Sun Room at 8 pm. As a Downton geek, I wish I could be in two places at once on April 16.
These are some great events and makes me feel lucky to be in an area with such interesting things to do!
