Living in Central Iowa, it is so easy to take mini trips and explore. Whether you go north, south, east, or west, there is a city within a few hours to travel and spend the day or weekend at!
Last summer we took a mini-getaway to Omaha, Nebraska. It was such a perfect trip for the weekend. We left on an early Friday afternoon and came back Sunday.

When we visited last summer we visited the Omaha Children’s Museum on a Saturday and spent a good portion of our day playing and exploring. There was something for every age, even Miss Amelia who was not even 1 year yet! Monte loved the grocery store!
On Sunday, we all got up bright and early and headed towards the zoo! It was a perfect hot and summery day 🙂 It definitely took us all day to walk through the entire zoo exploring and having fun. We probably could have spent a lot more time, but we headed back to Des Moines that night.
FOUR … While you are there, eating is important! Omaha has some great and fun restaurants geared towards everyone. One of our family’s favorite places to stop, during the Summer, is The Surf Side Club. If you decide to come into Omaha on the North side, you will drive right by and you can stop for dinner! They are known for their famous catfish, chicken, and corn fritters and you can sit right on the Missouri River to enjoy.
The kids enjoyed their first catfish experience 🙂
Visit Omaha has a great list of restaurants on their site!
The day you are at the zoo, pack a cooler! Fill it up with snacks, sandwiches and water bottles. Food can be expensive at the zoo, so being prepared can save you money!
Our #OmahaWeekend was a success! I highly recommend it for your family this summer!
