Go Outdoors with Tinkergarten

Summers for our kids today look so much different than I remember from my childhood. I recall being shoo-ed out the back door right after breakfast and with the exception of a quick lunch on the back patio, we were expected to entertain ourselves outside for the majority of the day. My siblings and neighbor comrades rode around on our bikes from house to house having adventures and exploring and inventing. In all reality, we were never further than 100 yards from home and the parents could collectively call around to quickly determine where our tiny gang had landed. But my memories are of making forts and hunting for berries in our overgrown juniper tree to make “magic potions”. Playing the rain and building obstacle courses over our dad’s wood pile in the backyard. Making kites out of sticks and attempting to fly them in the field behind our home. We were free to engage our environment in whatever way we saw fit without the direct oversight of parents and when I watch my four children play today, I yearn for something similar. Tinkergarten does all these things. Mud, forts, magic potions made of dandelions and so, so much more.

When I heard about Tinkergarten, I KNEW that it was something Des Moines needed – something that all our kids needed. They believe that kids become hooked on learning for life when they get opportunities to experience beauty, joy, wonder and exuberance, and become ‘lost in the experience.’ Our classes are designed to offer this as much as possible to the kids, but to parents as well. I am NOT outdoorsy by nature and it has been an amazing experience training and finding out how amazing child development can be when put in the hands of the children. I know that I also often wish I had more like-minded peers and Tinkergarten is an amazing way to make connections with new families who may be looking for the exact same thing. Win, win, win!
