Earth Day Events in Central Iowa 2017

There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day this year!Check out the list below for some fun ideas. A couple events require pre-registration, so make sure to register! If I am missing your Earth Day event, let me know! Make sure to follow our event calendar also!

EARTH DAY SCAVENGER HUNT & FUN 

Thursday, April 20th 

6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 

Walker – Johnston park (Rain location: Gloria Dei Lutheran Church)

Make bird feeders, plant seeds and do a scavenger hunt around the park. Must RSVP by April 10th.

EARTH DAY TRASH BASH 

Des Moines Parks and Recreation 

Friday, April 21st (rain date April 24th) 

12 p.m. – 5 p.m. 

This small events has quickly grown over the years. It began with a few individuals and has quickly grown into a collaborative project between several cities and individuals. The event will kick-off at noon with a free thank-you lunch for volunteers, sponsor recognition and educational booths. Afterwards, team captains will lead the volunteers to the different project locations across Des Moines to pick up trash.

The Metro Area is divided into volunteer project locations. Due to the size of this volunteer project, you must register with a team.

EARTH DAY TRASH BASH 

City of Johnston 

Friday, April 21st 

1 p.m. – 4 p.m. 

Johnston is participating in the above Earth Day Trash Bash. If you would like to help the community of Johnston, they will be picking up trash at Lew Clarkson Park, Beaver Creek and Johnston Drive. You can sign-up to volunteer by visiting here.

EARTH DAY YOGA & TRAIL CLEAN UP

Saturday, April 22nd 

8 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

Ankeny Outdoor Education Center 

Enjoy a free yoga class led by Donna Morgan, CYT & Meditation Guide, at the Outdoor Education Center, 8-9am, and trail clean up along 4 mile creek between NE 36th and NE 47th.

ATHLETA EARTH DAY EVENT 

Saturday, April 22nd 

8 a.m. – 11 a.m. 

Athleta 

Let’s Celebrate Mother Earth! Join us at 8:30 am for an outdoor class hosted by Mandy of Kris’ Hot Yoga! After class, join us for refreshments, fresh pressed juice hosted by Fresh Cafe & Market and Root from Waverly, Iowa!

EARTH DAY

Urbandale Public Library 

Create some art on Earth Day. Art demonstrations and activities for children and adults.

KIDS COOK!

Saturday, April 22nd 

10 a.m. – 11 a.m. 

Hy-Vee; Grand Avenue 

Cost: $10 per child
Join dietitian Lorraine for a fun-filled class featuring all things Earth Day! From planting seeds to special crafts, kids will learn about where plants come from and how to love the earth a little more! Suggested age range is 6 to 12 years. DOWNTOWN EARTH DAY TOUR 

Saturday, April 22nd

11 a.m. – 3 p.m. 

This year marks the fifth year of the Downtown Earth Day Tour with the Botanical Garden and the Science Center of Iowa. The celebration includes several drop-in activities offered at each location from several local organizations. You can also enjoy a fun scavenger hunt between the Botanical Garden and the Science Center of Iowa. On this day admission is FREE at the Botanical Garden.

EARTH DAY 

Saturday, April 22nd 

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge 

The refuge staff is looking for volunteers to help plant native plants and clear oak savanna habitats. Create a group and come or come as an individual. A free lunch will be provided. Call 515-994-3400 to register. Pre-registration is required.

THE GREAT CLOTH DIAPER CHANGE

Saturday, April 22nd

10 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

The Studio in Windsor Heights 

Judy Aagard’s desire to celebrate Earth Day by hosting a family event for the Tiny Tots community quickly morphed into a dream to set a Guinness World Record for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously. Shortly thereafter, The Great Cloth Diaper Change became an annual event. 

Several locations all over the world celebrate this day at the exact same time. Do not miss this fun event for the entire family. There are raffled prizes, swag bags, vendors and more.

EARTH DAY FAMILY FUN 

Saturday, April 22nd

10 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

West Des Moines City Hall 

Enjoy some family friendly outdoor activities. There will be opportunities to kayak, canoe, fish or create a small paddle boat. REI will also be there with an outdoor lounge to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or cocoa. There will also be free tree saplings handed out.

EARTH DAY LITTER REMOVAL

Saturday, April 22nd 

9 a.m. 

Brown’s Woods

Help beautify an urban forest preserve and adjacent roadways as we remove litter from Brown’s Woods and along 63rd St. Wear long pants, sturdy shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. Coffee will be available – be sure to bring your favorite mug! All equipment provided. Contact Melissa at melissa.schmeling@polkcountyiowa.gov to RSVP.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION CARNIVAL

Saturday, April 22nd 

10 a.m. – 2 p.m. 

Sage Tree in Altoona 

This celebration carnival is to help raise funds for the Audubon Society. Money raised goes to protect, clean up and educate about the local flood plains. There will be several businesses participating in this city-wide event.

There will be carnival games, food, prizes, local vendors and a bake sale.
