.) Eat a leisurely dinner at your favorite restaurant. Our favorite date night restaurants include Malo, the Iowa Taproom, Django, and Christopher’s. We recently tried Ceviche Bar in the East Village which is a great place.

.) Enjoy a concert or a play. For live music or theater, check out Des Moines Performing Arts (Des Moines Civic Center), the Des Moines Playhouse, or Hoyt Sherman Place to see what is currently running and coming up. Or if you need a laugh check out a live show at Teehee’s Comedy Club.

.) Grab a coffeeJava Joe’s or Smokey Row are great options for coffee and chats.

.) Explore open houses. Check out houses way out of your price range, just for fun.

.) Visit a museum. Check out the Des Moines Art Center, Historical Museum, or Science Center of Iowa. The Des Moines Art Center has a great lunch spot if you choose to do a day date. If you are looking for outdoor options check out Reiman Gardens or Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden.

.) Go to a movie. Flix Brewhouse is one of our go-to date night spots because we can enjoy dinner and drinks along with our movie. A fun date night for all!

.) Have drinks. Louie’s Wine Dive, Confluence, Peace Tree Brewing Co., and Exile are all excellent local choices. Many may offer great music, trivia nights, or other fun entertainment, Take a look at their website before you go!

.) Go to a game. One of our favorite date ideas, Des Moines has several sports teams you can support. Whether you like hockey, baseball, basketball or football, the Iowa Wild, Iowa Cubs, Energy, and Barnstormers all have exciting, inexpensive games. Go IOWA WILD!

.) Browse the bookstore. So, I’m a geek, but I love browsing shelf after shelf of books. Check out the Storyhouse Bookpub in the East Village and grab drinks afterward.

.) Go shopping. Yeah, this sounds boring, but sometimes it’s nice to just have a break to get errands done together. Twice a year, Hubs and I hire a babysitter and make a day of shopping for the kids’ birthdays and Christmas presents. We’ve had a great time doing this and its been a memorable date experience. Or don’t shop for the kids and shop for each other in Historic East Village or Valley Junction. A great way to support local!

.) Indulge in dessert. The Creme Dessert Lounge has delicious sweets and craft cocktails. Need I say more? Beforehand, grab pizza and wine up the street at Eatery A – which is the perfect place for happy hour.

.) Take a cooking class. Cooking With Alessandra has been a popular choice among our friends and a lot of fun. Bonus that you can re-create the meal on a date night at home.

.) Hit up an arcade. We haven’t tried Up-Down, a two-story arcade bar, yet but several of our friends love it and have had a blast on their date night. The Operating Room is also a great option with tons of pinball machines and other arcade games.

.) Trivia night. Many bars and restaurants host trivia. Check local breweries and bars. Smash Park in West Des Moines offers several monthly trivia nights with fun themes and loads of yard games for even more fun.

Active Date Ideas

.) Kayaking, boating, biking, or hiking. Gray’s Lake Park has paddle boats, or head to Big Creek to rent a kayak or boat. For hikes, we are fans of Ledges State Park. Take a look at the Interactive Park Map to get some great ideas. Go on a hike in the evening and find a romantic spot for a picnic.

.) Golfing or bowling. Hit up the golf course, go mini-golfing, or spend the evening at one of the many bowling alleys in Des Moines.

.) Paintball. Archery Field and Sports has a great paintball field. You could also try an archery lesson while you are there!

.) Dance classes. One of our favorite date nights was a salsa class we took back in the day (long before kids were even a thought). Des Moines Ballroom Dance offers classes or private lessons and a variety of dances to choose from.

.) Ice skating/roller skatingMany of the Des Moines area skating rinks offer adults-only nights or cheap skating nights.

Romantic Des Moines Date Ideas

.) Take a walk. A late-night walk around Gray’s Lake or the High Trestle Bridge (in Madrid, Iowa) is great for exercise and can be an incredibly romantic date night. Or take in the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in downtown Des Moines while you walk. It is the perfect setting! You can also use your own mobile device to enjoy a self-guided tour of all the sculptures.

.) Get a couples massage. East Village Spa is wonderful and in a great location.

.) Indulge in champagne brunch. Americana has a great spread. Complete the brunch with a walk through the Pappajohn Sculpture Park afterward.

At-Home Date Nights

.) Game night. We love game nights with friends or other couples. Our go-to game is Cards Against Humanity (not for the easily offended).

.) Date night in. We are pros at this one! Get takeout (we’re fans of Mi Patria) and wine, then watch a movie or play a game of Scrabble. It is our typical Thursday night.

.) Cook something fancy together. This could be a special dish you’ve always wanted to try, or maybe cook through a cookbook together. You could choose a new dish from the cookbook each week!
